(May 12)  \u003cbr/\u003e [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]  \u003cbr/\u003e ((New York)) \u003cbr/\u003e            The wafting smell of blossoming flowers is one of the joys of spring time. \u003cbr/\u003e            But a new study by researchers at the University of Virginia suggests the intoxicating odorsâ\u0026#x20AC;ŚTAKE VO OF TRAFFIC are increasingly being suffocated by air pollution. \u003cbr/\u003e            NATS: car exhaust \u003cbr/\u003e((Quinn McFrederick, University of Virginia))  \u003cbr/\u003e            \"Air pollution is reacting with floral scents, destroying those floral scent trails and we think that could have dire consequences.\" \u003cbr/\u003e            And they believe it's happening all over the world, in both urban and rural areas. \u003cbr/\u003e            ((Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press)) \u003cbr/\u003e            \"Researchers say that up until the 19th century, a flower's fragrance could carry up to 4,000 feet. These days the scent can travel as little as 650 feet.\" \u003cbr/\u003e            What happens is when the flower releases its gaseous scent molecules, the air pollution molecules bond with them. \u003cbr/\u003e            \"All of the flowers smell less, and all of the flowers smell the same.\" \u003cbr/\u003e            Besides making it harder for people to \"stop and smell the roses,\" the reduced scent could mean bees are having a harder time finding flowers and other plants, making it harder for them to pollinate. \u003cbr/\u003eThis hurts the eco-system, and could make the human food supply, 1/3 of which is dependent on pollinators, vulnerable. \u003cbr/\u003eThe researchers say the lessening of flora fragrance is also contributing to a dramatic decline in the worldwide bee population over the last several years.  \u003cbr/\u003eNo one is exactly sure why this is happening. \u003cbr/\u003e((Jim Burgess, Beekeeper))  \u003cbr/\u003e \"The theories are A to Z cell phone
