of a former military commander convicted of more than 20 murders.\u003cbr/\u003eThe execution of Abdullah Shah at a jail just east of the capital, Kabul, took place on April 20, but the government only acknowledged the sentence had been carried out after it was revealed by Amnesty International in an e-mailed protest letter on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe international human rights group accused the government of carrying out the sentence without affording the accused \"even the most basic standards\" of fairness.\u003cbr/\u003eIt said the suspect was likely silenced so he could not testify against commanders allied to the government who have allegedly carried out human rights abuses.\u003cbr/\u003e\"During his detention, Abdullah Shah reportedly revealed first hand evidence against several regional commanders currently in positions of power against whom no charges have been brought,\" the group said, but it did not name the commanders.\u003cbr/\u003eJawed Ludin, a spokesman for President Hamid Karzai, told APTN that the Afghan leader had signed the death warrant reluctantly, in the interest of justice.\u003cbr/\u003eOther officials said Shah's execution in Pul-e-Charkhi jail had been carried out in front of witnesses, including representatives of the police and the attorney general's office. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors were also on hand.\u003cbr/\u003eAhmad Nader Nadery, a commissioner with the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, told APTN the announcement of the execution had come as a surprise and that various human rights groups had been urging clemency.\u003cbr/\u003eNadery said he doubted Shah had been given a proper hearing, despite having been tried twice.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he hoped the first post-Taliban execution would not open the doors to more judicial killings, quoting from the Koran that forgiveness was a better form of justice than revenge. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Ludin said that Shah's case had been before the courts for over a year, had received a lot of publicity and that human rights lawyers could have availed themselves of access to the prisoner. \u003cbr/\u003eLudin said Karzai ordered a review of the case after Shah was first found guilty and that a further investigation also confirmed his guilt. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said the death sentence was delayed for months while the government addressed concerns of local and international human rights groups.\u003cbr/\u003eShah was first convicted of more than 20 counts of murder in special court proceedings in October 2002. \u003cbr/\u003eNine people testified against him at the trial, including a wife he tried to burn to death by dousing her with petrol and setting her on fire.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bodies of many of Shah's victims were found in a well in Paghman district, just east of the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eShah served under another commander, Zardad, who was a deputy of former prime minister and warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.\u003cbr/\u003eHe earned the nickname \"Zardad's dog\", because he was known to have attacked people \"like a dog.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIn the early 1990s, Shah and Zardad reportedly robbed passers-by on the road from Kabul to Jalalabad.\u003cbr/\u003eAmnesty said it was \"shocked\" that the execution was carried out, and said it contravened an assurance that Karzai gave the group for a moratorium on such punishments.\u003cbr/\u003eIt said Shah was not provided a defence attorney at a secret trial, and that the first judge in his case was dismissed for taking a bribe. \u003cbr/\u003eThe second judge, the group said, came under pressure from the Supreme Court to impose the sentence.\u003cbr/\u003eShah claimed during trial that a confession was obtained under torture, but Amnesty said those charges were not properly investigated.\u003cbr/\u003eAt least two other people, suspected Taliban wanted in the November 2003 killing of French UN worker Betinna Goislard, have been sentenced to death in
