Various of congressman Lee Ryan's coffin being returned to USA\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty years ago, in November of 1978, the world was shocked by the mass suicide/murder of more than 900 followers of a religious cult leader named Jim Jones.\u003cbr/\u003eIt happened in a part of Guyana, known as Jonestown.\u003cbr/\u003eThe orgy of killing began after a fact-finding mission lead by a U-S Congressman and a team of journalists was attacked by the Jones followers as they were leaving the compound along with a number of disgruntled cult members. \u003cbr/\u003eHaving killed Congressman Lee Ryan and four other members of the party, the Jones followers realised that the outside world would not leave them alone for long.\u003cbr/\u003eJones gave instructions for cult members to drink poison and shot those who refused.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty years after the Jonestown massacre, the full story of exactly how and why the suicides and murders happened is still under dispute.\u003cbr/\u003eSome believe the answers to those questions may lie in more than 5,000 pages of information the U.S. government has kept secret for two decades.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the years, there have been rumors of CIA involvement.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the conspiracy theories to explain the massacre are the suggestions that C-I-A agents were posing as members to gather information and that the agency was conducting some kind of mind control experiment.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1980, the House Select Committee on Intelligence determined that the C-I-A was not involved with the Jones cult, known as the People's Temple, and had no advance knowledge of the mass murder-suicide.\u003cbr/\u003eThe committee released a 782-page report, but kept more than 5,000 other pages secret.\u003cbr/\u003eWithout those documents, it's hard to confirm or refute the speculations that have sprung up around Jonestown.\u003cbr/\u003eWhat is known about the end of Jonestown is that on November 18, 1978, cult leader Jim Jones ordered more than 900 of his followers to drink cyanide-poisoned punch.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the dead: more than 270 children.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly two years before, Jones had been the toast of San Francisco political circles. \u003cbr/\u003eAs the charismatic leader of the People's Temple, an interracial organisation that helped the desperate - and voted by the thousands - he was courted by the likes of Mayor George Moscone and Willie Brown, an assembly man at the time.\u003cbr/\u003eBut after an August 1977 magazine article detailed ex-members' stories of beatings and forced donations, Jones had abruptly moved his flock to Jonestown, a settlement in the Guyana jungle.\u003cbr/\u003eIn May 1978, People's Temple member Deborah Layton slipped out of Guyana. \u003cbr/\u003eShe went to the U-S consulate, and later the newspapers, with a warning: Jones was conducting drills for a mass murder-suicide.\u003cbr/\u003eBut there was little official government action until November 1978 when U-S House of Representatives member Leo Ryan, who had been contacted by a number of people worried about their relatives in the People's Temple, decided to lead a\u003cbr/\u003edelegation of reporters and relatives to Jonestown.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir visit began happily enough, but the mood soured after some Jonestown residents indicated they wanted to defect. \u003cbr/\u003eThe group was ambushed as they tried to leave at a nearby airstrip.\u003cbr/\u003eRyan and four others were summarily executed as they lay wounded on the ground after the initial attack.\u003cbr/\u003eA sound man for NBC News, Steven Sung, told reporters at the time what it was like to see his partner, cameraman Bob Brown, killed and how he managed to escape the same fate.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I hit the deck, I lie face down, I had my arm over my head basically, as though you go to sleep with a baby. One arm, my right arm was over my face... and my face was pushed against, kissing the floor, as close as possible.  I didn't want to move because I know they keep shooting. And next thing I heard, they walking towards us, one of the men, and somehow - one shot hit Bob Brown in the leg, I believe, I don't know what part of the body and he screamed \"Ouch!\" or called \"Shit\" or something, I don't know, and next thing i know the guy came close and blew his brain off.  And next thing I know I thought oh next one'll be me who'll get killed. So I just didn't think about it, I just think about my little daughter, and next thing I know I have a tremendous pressure, explosion right next to my head, and my arm just feel like falling apart, but I won't dare to move one single muscle, and probably that saved my life. I guess what really saved my life is because my arms was at my head, so the bullet missed my brain and hit my arm instead and I didn't move and the blood was all over the place , so they thought I
