Sand blowing across dune\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now, the only slopes in the United Arab Emirates were sand dunes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut come September (2005) there will be a ski slope too.\u003cbr/\u003eIn one of the world's hottest countries, the Ski Dubai indoor ski slope will feature a black diamond run (as well as beginner terrain), a half-pipe and the world's first curved chairlift up the hill.\u003cbr/\u003eRaising the ski slope involved the latest in construction technology. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen most people think of Dubai, beaches, holidays and year round sunshine spring to mind. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the emirate's desert safaris and water sports, will soon be competing with a leisure attraction of an altogether different kind.\u003cbr/\u003eRising up from the desert terrain is the Middle East's first indoor ski slope.\u003cbr/\u003eThe faux mountainside playground, dubbed Ski Dubai, is currently a cacophony of jackhammers with forests of steel scaffolding surrounding it.\u003cbr/\u003eBut come September 2005, when the city's furnace-like heat gets too much to bear, folks will be able to cool off at their local resort with tumbling snowflakes, skiing and snowboarding on five trails.\u003cbr/\u003eTo build what amounts to a giant freezer in the middle of a desert, engineers are having to use innovative technology.\u003cbr/\u003eWith no natural hill to attach the slope to, the 200-foot (62-metre) vertical drop and trails 400 metre-long trails (1,300 feet) had to be built from scratch.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was assembled in sections and a special technique was used to lift it into place.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Over all three thousand tonnes of steel assembled at low level and then strand jacked, as it is called, up into place and that really has been an amazing engineering feat.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Phil Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of Ski Dubai\u003cbr/\u003eThe slope weighs as much as 17 Boeing 747s... it's as wide as three Olympic-sized swimming pools.\u003cbr/\u003eLifting the top sections had to be done gradually to maintain the right angle to allow them to lock perfectly into place.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The biggest challenge of all was actually ensuring that, because it is inclined, that it was lifting very evenly and the loads and structure were performing as predicted and so every half an hour there were stops and measurements taken, it was very very gradual. Designing the structure so it works almost like a vacuum flask, this huge air void creating insulation for us, and putting the coolant directly into the snow layer, so it's really applying the energy
