This definitely should have been avoided by withdrawing the impeachment. That is what the appeal of the Bar, that was the appeal of the Maha Nayake (the head of the Buddhist monks), that was the appeal of most of the political parties that sit with the government, it is completely ignoring these requests. They are going ahead with this impeachment quite unfairly and quite unconstitutionally.\"\u003cbr/\u003e20. Wide of government supporters\u003cbr/\u003eSri Lanka's chief justice appeared before a Parliamentary committee for a second time on Tuesday to answer impeachment charges in a case that has drawn protests from both supporters and opponents. \u003cbr/\u003eThousands of government-supporters took to the streets calling for Shirani Bandaranayake's resignation, while Buddhist monks, Catholic priests, opposition lawmakers, judges, lawyers and rights activists rallied in support of her.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government has accused Bandaranayake of misusing power and having unexplained wealth. \u003cbr/\u003eShe denies any wrongdoing. \u003cbr/\u003eOpposition parties and some analysts say the impeachment attempt is aimed at stifling the independence of the judiciary and concentrating the power of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are going ahead with this impeachment quite unfairly and quite unconstitutionally,\" said J.C. Weliamuna, a human rights lawyer and activist. He said the \"government is hell-bent on getting rid of chief justice\" for ruling against it several times.\u003cbr/\u003eThose in favour of the motion shouted slogans demanding Bandaranayake's resignation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe impeachment motion was submitted a month ago calling for a Parliament Select Committee to investigate 14 charges and remove Bandaranayake.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the committee determines that the complaint has merit, an impeachment motion will be voted on and forwarded to Rajapaksa for further action. \u003cbr/\u003eWith his ruling coalition controlling more than two-thirds of Parliament's seats, such a motion is expected to be carried easily.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations, the United States and rights groups have expressed concerns about the motion, which follows months of conflict between Parliament and the judiciary.\u003cbr/\u003eBandaranayake came under strong government criticism after she ruled that legislation giving more power to Minister of Economic
