Pope Francis walking down line of immigrants shaking their hands\u003cbr/\u003eOn July 8th 2013 nearly two hundred immigrants from Africa arrived in the port of Lampedusa just as the plane carrying Pope Francis was landing on the the tiny Sicilian island.\u003cbr/\u003eThe immigrants were escorted into the port aboard Coast Guard boat. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Simone Aniello, Commander of the Coast Guard ship162 Eritrean immigrants arrived in the port.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They all seemed to be in good condition. They were just cold,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eLampedusa, a treeless, strip of an island nine kilometres (four miles) long, is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the main port of entry into Europe for African migrants smuggled by boat from Libya or Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, a kilometre (mile) away the local population was gathering on a football field, waiting for the arrival of Pope Francis. \u003cbr/\u003ePope Francis was scheduled to pray for migrants lost at sea.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancis, whose grandparents immigrated to Argentina from Italy, has a special place in his heart for refugees: As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he denounced the exploitation of migrants as \"slavery\" and said those who did nothing to help them were complicit by their silence.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has also said he wants his to be a missionary church that goes to the \"peripheries\" to minister to the most marginal.\u003cbr/\u003ePope Francis travelled on July 8th to the tiny Sicilian island of Lampedusa to pray for migrants lost at sea, going to the farthest reaches of Italy to throw a wreath of flowers into the sea and celebrate Mass.\u003cbr/\u003eLampedusa, a treeless, strip of an island nine kilometres (four miles) long, is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the main port of entry into Europe for African migrants smuggled by boat from Libya or Tunisia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pope flew from Rome to Lampedusa's airport then travelled in an Italian Coast Guard vessel to the islands main port.\u003cbr/\u003eAs he pulled into port, Francis blessed a wreath of yellow and white flowers and tossed it into the sea in memory of those migrants who died. \u003cbr/\u003eHe then disembarked and greeted a few dozen migrants one by one, stopping to chat with a few.\u003cbr/\u003eAs his plane was landing, a boat carrying 162 Eritreans had arrived in port, the latest in a new wave of migrants taking advantage of calm seas and warm weather to make the treacherous crossing.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the time the Pope arrived at the port the most recent group of immigrants had been bussed away.\u003cbr/\u003eLeaving the pier, the Pope drove through the port greeting the enthusiastic crowd of Lampedusans who showed up to see him. \u003cbr/\u003eIn an indication of how Francis is changing the rules of this papacy, he travelled by open-top vehicle through throngs of well-wishers, shunning the bullet-proof popemobile that popes usually use when outside the Vatican.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was not even thinkable that the Pope would come to an island like this one. I am so happy, I am so emotional. I just can't believe it,\" said Andrea Pavia, Lampedusa resident.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pope then said Mass on the island's sports field, and thanked the residents for welcoming so many men and women over the years. \u003cbr/\u003eHe prayed for those who died trying to make a better life for themselves and their families.\u003cbr/\u003eFrancis, whose ancestors immigrated to Argentina from Italy, has a
