And that's what they did,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said he doesn't believe the military wanted to hold onto power over the country forever, insisting it was \"patriotic\" in its own way.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"They just have no allegiance to democratic principles,\" he said. \u003cbr/\u003eSifton said the military genuinely wanted the two parties to resolve the deadlock and restore political stability to the country but it was going about itt in the wrong way.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are seizing power because of a political deadlock...and I suppose on some level, they sincerely want to make the situation better,\" he said.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"But what they don't understand is that by ceding so much resentment and chaos on the political scene, they're probably making it worse.\"\u003cbr/\u003eExacerbating the political crisis, Sifton said, was the fact that three of Thailand's prime ministers had been detained.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he said one of the most \"remarkable things\" about this coup was that the military didn't just detain the politicians and protesters.\u003cbr/\u003e\"they have now gone and closed down all the newsrooms and television stations and they've blocked international satellite feeds. This military is patriotic in their own ways, they just have no allegiance to democratic principles.  They are seizing power because of a political deadlock; they have allegiance to the King, to the monarchy, the head of state.  And I suppose on some level, they sincerely want to make the situation better.  But what they don't understand is that by ceding so much resentment and chaos on the political scene, they're probably making it worse.  They are making the situation worse.
