Tilt down from art deco building down Areopagitou street\u003cbr/\u003eAnger continues to simmer in Greece over the planned demolition of a landmark art deco building to improve the view from the new Acropolis museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe country's former culture minister upset architects and conservationists last month by clearing the way for the demolition.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents are now angry that the new minister shares his predecessor's views. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a tour of the museum on Monday, new culture minister Michalis Liapis stood in the shadow of the art deco building with the Acropolis in view and said that fhe issue had been \"solved conclusively.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJust a few days after the fires in ancient Olympia, former culture minister George Voulgarakis revoked his ministry's protection of the 1930s building, saying that tearing it down would \"allow an unimpeded view of the Acropolis\" from the new museum. He also argued that excavating the site could \"reveal antiquities whose existence is considered highly likely.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe four-story building, with its pink marbled facade, stands about 300 yards from the Acropolis on a carefully landscaped pedestrian street facing the ancient citadel's southern slopes. \u003cbr/\u003eA mosaic of Oedipus and the Sphinx adorn the top story, and marble statues of women in traditional dress flank the wrought-iron door. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was designed by Greek architect Vassilis Kouremenos, a Paris-trained friend of Pablo Picasso.\u003cbr/\u003eA neighbouring building is also set to be demolished. It's owned by composer Vangelis Papathanassiou, who won an Academy Award for creating the score for \"Chariots of Fire.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe dispute over the two structures is overshadowing the opening of the 179 (m) million USD dollar Acropolis museum, planned for early 2008 after a delay of more than two decades.\u003cbr/\u003eGreece hopes the new museum will eventually display the Elgin Marbles, a collection of sculptures removed from the Parthenon in the early 19th century and currently housed in London's British Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThe British Museum has refused Greece's request to return the sculptures, but a space awaits them in a gallery on the top floor of the new museum.\u003cbr/\u003eGreece's Ministry of Public Works must still remove the buildings from its own list of protected structures, although it was unlikely to refuse after the Culture Ministry's decision.\u003cbr/\u003eBut residents have not given up hope.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are hoping in the sensitivity of the minister of public works and the environment,\" said Nikos Rousseas, whose office is housed in the art deco building. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Ministry of Culture does not consider this as a work of art and a monument, but still since 1978 these two building are being protected, are being listed by the Ministry of Public Works and the environment,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So unless the minister goes and lifts up, as well, the protection decree, this building keeps on being protected.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDefenders of the art deco building have launched an international e-mail campaign to save it, accusing the government of sacrificing Greece's modern treasures to showcase its ancient history.
