Because usually in New York if you're given funding you're expected to complete a piece, and that's supposed to be its final version and that's what you present on stage. Wideshot Boat on shore\u003cbr/\u003eTucked away in a rustic forest on Martha's Vineyard - an exclusive resort island off the east coast of the United States - is a unique retreat that allows professional dancers to focus on their work without any distractions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Yard is considered to be America's premier residential colony devoted to the development of new dance, where professional performers come together to create free from the hustle and bustle of their home cities.  \u003cbr/\u003eFor more than thirty years, The Yard has offered education and support to dancers in an environment where they can stretch both their physical and creative muscles. \u003cbr/\u003eMany come from New York City, where practice space and the dancers' time are precious commodities. At The Yard, carefully selected choreographers and dancers are given the means to pursue their craft, leaving financing and other everyday worries behind.  \u003cbr/\u003eCherylyn Lavagnino is a choreographer and chair of the Department of Dance at New York University's Tisch school of the Arts. She says that the environment at The Yard is unique for dancers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Yard was founded by Patricia Nanon, who passed away in February 2008 at age 84. A professional dancer in her youth, Nanon started the workshop in 1973, envisioning a \"playground without walls\" for performing artists.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Yard is well-known to the New York dance scene, and dancers from all over the country apply for the workshops. \u003cbr/\u003eChristine McMillan is a member of Cherylyn Lavagnino dance group. She says that she appreciates the no pressure atmosphere for dancers.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer residents have gone on to earn Guggenheim, MacArthur and Fulbright Fellowships, and to become prominent performers and choreographers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe program is mostly for US dancers, but has also welcomed dancers from Korea, Denmark, and Canada.   \u003cbr/\u003eThe Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance company enjoyed a month-long residency at the Yard, preparing a work that evoked the intense complexity of relationships. \u003cbr/\u003eAway from the city lifestyle, where dancers often work for several choreographers and hold other jobs, the company watched life slow down and creativity speed up, with daily rehearsals of about three hours. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir days began with a dance class to warm up, with a different member of the nine-person company giving the class each day.   \u003cbr/\u003eCherylyn Lavagnino values The Yard as a unique place where choreographers can explore ideas free of pressure. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to directing her own dance company, Lavagnino chairs the Department of Dance at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She choreographed a 20-minute piece in three weeks, which she says is much faster than she works in the city.  \u003cbr/\u003eBefore rehearsing Lavagnino's piece, the dancers put on pointe shoes, taping up the toes protect them.   \u003cbr/\u003eFor Christine McMillan, The Yard offers a respite from the overwhelming pressures of New York life and a place for creativity to flourish. Unlike many funding sources in New York City, the Yard encourages new work but does not require a perfectly completed piece by the end of the residency, she says.   \u003cbr/\u003eWorld-renowned Canadian dancer Margie Gillis came from Quebec to perform at the Yard. \u003cbr/\u003eThe dancer's solo performances are known for their characterisation of the complexity of human emotions, and her innovative, improvisational style has made her a ground-breaking force in the modern dance community.\u003cbr/\u003eGillis is an Honorary Cultural ambassador for Quebec and the Canadian government, and was the first modern dancer appointed to the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honour.   \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that The Yard has a unique position for the US dance
