Leading Jewish survivors say they will now attend remembrance  ceremonies at the Nazi death camp next week.\u003cbr/\u003eOver one and a half million (m) people were killed there, the vast majority were Jews but  there's been criticism that too much attention has paid to the memory of  Polish  victims.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the concentration camps set up by the Nazis in World War Two were razed to  the ground, but Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated before it was completely destroyed.  Now it's a museum.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors come to see the huts where prisoners were incarcerated and the ovens where  they were incinerated.\u003cbr/\u003eHalf a (m) million people have visited the museum each year since the collapse of  communism in Poland in 1989.\u003cbr/\u003eBut instead of being a useful educational site, some say it's become just another tourist  attraction.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For many people in this city, as well as for many visitors, Auschwitz has become a  tourist attraction. The thought is while travelling through Poland one should also see  Auschwitz. Jews, Poles, lesbians, homosexuals and the disabled were amongst those  killed here.\u003cbr/\u003eThe director of the Auschwitz Museum says younger generations need this museum to  understand the past.\u003cbr/\u003eThese days many of the visitors are those in the 16 to 18 year-old age group. They don't  have a personal connection to the history. Therefore we need new means, new exhibit  means, and on the whole new pedagogical means. Thus, we are planning to change the  exhibit. This should occur over the next years - perhaps in three years.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION:  Krystyna Oleksy, Director, Auschwitz Museum\u003cbr/\u003eThe revamp, though costly, is long overdue: only 200 of the 600 barrack huts are still  standing , they, the crematoria and gas chambers are falling into disrepair.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum has also been criticised for giving too much attention to the camp's Polish  victims.\u003cbr/\u003eSome argue that it has downplayed the fact that 90 percent of the one and a half (m)  million people killed here were Jews, the camp is the world's biggest Jewish cemetery.\u003cbr/\u003eThe museum's director wants to change the perception that there has been too much  attention paid to Polish victims.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our wish would be that in the new exhibit every Polish visitor would understand why  this place is so important for the Jews.  And, likewise, that the Jewish visitor  understand what Auschwitz means for the Poles.
