Close-up of boy's face \u003cbr/\u003eFor Kabul's street children, the Ashiana organisation offers one of the few chances they have of receiving a basic education and chance of learning a trade. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Ashiana Childrens' Centres teach about one thousand-434 boys and girls at four locations across Kabul. \u003cbr/\u003eSince the Taliban's departure from the city, girls can once again attend the centres. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are about 200 in total and they're taught in separate classrooms. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother centre is due to open in West Kabul and will be able to look after about another hundred children. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first Ashiana centre opened its doors in 1995. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're funded by several non-governmental organisations including the International Committee of the Red Cross (I-C-R-C); the United Nations children's fund, UNICEF; and the French organisation Terra De Somme (Men of Earth).  \u003cbr/\u003eThe centres employ 70 staff, mainly teachers, who receive proper wages. \u003cbr/\u003eKabul's street children roam the city begging or trying to sell rubbish they find on the dumps. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also shine shoes, burn incense or pick-pocket.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut they aren't necessarily orphans. \u003cbr/\u003eAs Ashiana's Director Shamin explains, the children's parents may not earn a proper income, they may be sick, or they just can not afford to care for their offspring. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the centre they learn to read and write, but the emphasis is put on teaching the youngsters a wage earning trade. \u003cbr/\u003eSome learn to carve wood, others paint pictures, or they make paper flowers. \u003cbr/\u003eAll things that can be sold in shops. \u003cbr/\u003eThe children also learn basic first-aid and hygiene and are fed breakfast and lunch.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1996 Ashiana carried out a survey and found out there were 28 thousand street children in Kabul. \u003cbr/\u003eToday the organisation
