Various exterior shots of house where Baraa Melhem claims to have been held captive\u003cbr/\u003eA Palestinian woman who claimed to have been imprisoned by her own father has had her first taste of freedom in ten years.\u003cbr/\u003e20-year-old Baraa Melhem hugged her teary eyed mother Maysoun Mardawi in a relative's house on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eMelhem was rescued by Palestinian security forces in the West Bank town of Qalqiliya on Saturday after an aunt notified police.\u003cbr/\u003eBaraa says that for ten years she had been living under threats of rape and abuse.\u003cbr/\u003e\"One day he came, and he began locking me up, but not immediately just from time to time. He would give the keys to my step-mother, who would lock the door, and she would let me go out to clean, to mop, to wash, to make food for the children,\" she said in a television interview with the Associated Press on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking softly but confidently, she described a horrifying existence in which she was beaten, barely fed and let out only in the middle of the night to do housework. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she was given only a blanket, radio and a razor blade by her father and stepmother and alleges both of them encouraged her to kill herself.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the years the family moved twice more. \u003cbr/\u003eEach time she was locked up. \u003cbr/\u003eIn her final home in Qalqilya, she was kept in what she described as a bathroom three feet wide and three feet long (one metre by one metre).\u003cbr/\u003eMelhem is now living with her mother, Maysoun, in an Arab neighbourhood of Jerusalem.\u003cbr/\u003eClutching a large doll that her mother gave her as a gift, Melhem said she was finally happy in her new home - a shabby, purple-painted room with pink curtains, four mattresses on the ground and a red blanket. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says her greatest gift though came from her rescuers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I didn't even get time to get past the front steps, when my eyes were blinded by the sun. I asked them, 'is that the sun? The sun has risen after all this darkness'.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMelhem said she did not know why her father had imprisoned her. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said she was first locked up in a bathroom after she ran away from home when she was 10. \u003cbr/\u003eShe claims police returned her home and her father forced her to sign a statement saying she didn't want to go back to school. \u003cbr/\u003eMelhem's parents divorced when she was young and her father had custody.\u003cbr/\u003eHer biological mother wept on Tuesday as she spoke of her daughter's ordeal.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am a mother that was deprived from seeing her daughter for 20 years and then after all these years I discover that my own daughter had to go through all these inhuman sufferings, locked inside a dark bathroom like a cell,\" Maysoun Mardawi said. \"Even a prison cell has a small window, she did not.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHala Shreim, a social worker who accompanied police on the rescue, said Melhem will need years of
