Frieda Khalo is famous, a lot of people know about her because she had a terrible accident when she was young. And the result of that, she was continuously in and out of hospital and spent years of her life trussed up in corsets unable to get out of bed and it was because of this terrible accident that she started painting.\u003cbr/\u003e8. GV exhibition\u003cbr/\u003eBritain is taking its most comprehensive look at celebrated Mexcian artist Frida Kahlo's life and work, through an exhibition at the Tate Modern Gallery in London. \u003cbr/\u003eKahlo, the daughter of a Mexican Indian and Spanish mother and a German-Jewish immigrant father, was proud of her multiple identities. She was an artist, a woman, a cripple, a proud Mexican, a Jew, a wife, an adulterer, and above all, an icon whose art is inextricable from her painful life story.\u003cbr/\u003eTate curators Emma Dexter and Tanya Barson have designed the exhibition along broadly chronological lines, with 87 works on display, including including two paintings lent by Madonna and 68 that have never been exhibited in the United Kingdom.\u003cbr/\u003eKahlo's current vogue may stem from her self-awareness and modernity. \u003cbr/\u003eA well-reviewed 2002 Hollywood biopic starring Salma Hayek, \"Frida,\" also contributed to public fascination.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Kahlo was 18, a streetcar collided with the crowded Mexico City bus on which she was a passenger. Kahlo was impaled on a metal handrail that went through her pelvis. A long, painful recovery left her bedridden and driven by boredom to paint.\u003cbr/\u003eKahlo married Mexican muralist Diego Rivera at the age of 22. He was nearly twice her age when they married, and his artistic achievement eclipsed hers throughout her life.\u003cbr/\u003eThe relationship consumed her, and she referred to Rivera in her journals as both her child and her father. She continued to love him through her affairs - including one with Leon Trotsky - and through Rivera's own dalliances. They divorced in 1939, but remarried a year later.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition explores self portraiture, Kahlo's love of her native Mexico and her analysis of the powerful political and ecomonic forces affecting it, her use of Aztec symbols and her exploration of themes of life and death.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is a wedding portrait, paintings inspired by Kahlo's miscarriage and one of her holding Rivera as an infant.\u003cbr/\u003eOne painting Kahlo created during separation from Diego is also one of her largest and most familiar - \"The Two Fridas\" - in which two versions of Kahlo sit on opposite sides of a nearly square canvas. While the bodies turn slightly toward each other in mutual acknowledgment, the gazes from both women remain fixed on the viewer.The painting depicts two aspects of a whole - the half of Kahlo that Rivera loved, and the half that felt unloved through the course of their relationship. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition also includes \"Self-portrait as a Tehuana\" or \"Diego on My Mind,\" in which Kahlo wears the elaborate lacy headdress typical of women in the Tehuantepec province of Mexico.
