1972.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was attended by his grandson Christopher Nixon Cox and 45 members of the Richard Nixon foundation, including other relatives and former White House staff.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the banquet Yang Jiechi, Chinese State Councillor in charge of foreign affairs, gave a speech in which he encouraged both China and the US to do more to improve that relationship.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We need animosities of the Cold War.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We must renew and refresh that vision, and courage and determination and secure and extend the friendship between our two peoples and our two nations that began 40 years ago when President Nixon arrived here in Beijing,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was July 1971 when Nixon made a live TV appearance announcing his plans to visit the Communist country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe trip followed two years of intense negotiations led by Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.\u003cbr/\u003eNixon, a Republican who had previously portrayed himself as a fierce critic of Communism, finally shook hands with Chairman Mao Zedong before breaking diplomatic ground when the 'Shanghai communique' was announced at the end of the visit, on February 28th. \u003cbr/\u003eAs part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Nixon's birth, the group will retrace the former president's steps in \"the week that changed the world\", as the 1972 trip has often been
