Wide of Lessing posing for photos on her doorstep then going into house \u003cbr/\u003eDoris Lessing, author of dozens of works from short stories to science fiction, including the classic \"The Golden Notebook,\" said she \"wasn't expecting to win\" the Nobel Prize for literature after she was named on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough she is widely celebrated for \"The Golden Notebook\" and other works, she has received little attention in recent years and has been criticised as strident and eccentric.\u003cbr/\u003eJust hours after hearing that she had won the award, Lessing told reporters she was particularly surprised as, some forty years ago, she had been told her she would never win.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I wasn't expecting to win it since they told me I never would,\" Lessing said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It was probably because they didn't like what they called my science fiction series which was the Shikasta series, but this is because the literary establishment is very very narrow minded. I've never approved of this business of dividing men and women writers into different... well what, it makes them sound like enemies,\" Lessing told reporters outside her house in North London.\u003cbr/\u003eLessing, who is the oldest choice ever for a prize that usually goes to writers in their 50s and 60s, suggested to reporters that the only reason she won is because she is \"getting on a bit.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Now she's getting on a bit, they think, you better give it to her this year. She might pop off and we'll never give it to her. This is what I think happened. Because I'm now 89, you know, that's very, very old for anything really,\" said Lessing.\u003cbr/\u003eLessing is the second British writer to win the prize since 2005 when Harold Pinter received it. \u003cbr/\u003eTurkey's Orhan Pamuk won in 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eLessing, who has won a string of prizes, including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 1995, told reporters \"there are other things in ones life apart from prizes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShe described the Nobel prize as the \"most glamorous\" award she has received but added that \"doesn't mean to say it is the best.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"I said it's the most glamorous, which it is. I once won a prize which consisted of being called the Best Milkmaid in Norway which was really one of the most charming prizes I've ever won,\" Lessing added.\u003cbr/\u003eLessing's work, which has drawn heavily from her time living in Africa, has explored the divide between whites and blacks, most notably in 1950's \"The Grass Is Singing,\" which examined the relationship between a white farmer's wife and her black servant.\u003cbr/\u003eThe academy called it \"both a tragedy based in love-hatred and a study of unbridgeable racial conflicts.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLessing was born to British parents who were living in what is now Bakhtaran, Iran. \u003cbr/\u003eThe family moved to a farm in southern Rhodesia, which is now Zimbabwe, in 1925, an experience she described in the first part of her autobiography \"Under My Skin\" that was released in 1994.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause of her criticism of the South African regime, and its apartheid system, she was prohibited from entering the country between 1956 and 1995. \u003cbr/\u003eLessing's semi-autobiographical \"Children Of Violence\" series, five books spanning 1952 to 1969, was largely set in Africa.\u003cbr/\u003eHer breakthrough was the 1962 novel \"The Golden Notebook,\" which was seen as a pioneering work by the feminist movement.\u003cbr/\u003eHer other important novels include \"The Summer Before Dark\" in 1973 and \"The Fifth Child\" in 1988.\u003cbr/\u003eShe has also been lauded for her work in science fiction, penning the series \"Canopus in Argos: Archives\" from 1979-1984, that studied the post-atomic war development of humanity.\u003cbr/\u003eThe academy said that Lessing's \"vision of global catastrophe forcing mankind to return to a more primitive life\" has been readily apparent in some of her recent books.\u003cbr/\u003eThose include \"Mara and Dann\" from 1999 and its sequel, \"the Story of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and the Snow Dog,\" published in 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eThe literature award was the fourth of this year's Nobel Prizes to be announced.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, Gerhard Ertl of Germany won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for studies of chemical reactions on solid surfaces. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, France's Albert Fert and German Peter Gruenberg won the physics award for discovering a phenomenon that lets computers and digital music players store reams of data on ever-shrinking hard disks.\u003cbr/\u003eAmericans Mario R. Capecchi and Oliver Smithies, and Briton Sir Martin J. Evans, won the medicine prize on Monday for groundbreaking discoveries that led to a powerful technique for manipulating mouse genes.\u003cbr/\u003ePrizes for peace and economics will be on Friday and
