Wide R.E.M. on stage\u003cbr/\u003eThe annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is usually a full on celebration, but this year's event started on a sombre note.\u003cbr/\u003eSoul legend Aretha Franklin took to the stage to pay tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, who died in December.  \u003cbr/\u003eErtegun was one of the Hall of Fame founders as well as the founder of Atlantic Records, \u003cbr/\u003eHe helped shape the careers of Franklin, Ray Charles and the Rolling Stones (just to name a few).\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's class of Hall of Fame inductees was a mix as eclectic as Ertegun's protegees. \u003cbr/\u003eR.E.M., the Ronettes, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Van Halen were all honoured as a part of the class of 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eRolling Stone Keith Richards spoke of his fond memories of working with the Ronettes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group, composed of two sisters and a cousin, burst onto the music scene in the 1960s. \u003cbr/\u003eRonnie Spector, who was married to the now infamous music producer Phil Spector, acted as the lead singer for the trio.   \u003cbr/\u003eAt the height of their careers, the Ronettes toured with the Beatles and had the hit singles 'Be My Baby' and 'Do I Love You.'\u003cbr/\u003eLead singer Ronnie thanked a list of people from Cher to Springsteen to her publicist - but made no mention of her ex-husband.\u003cbr/\u003ePhil Spector's trial for the murder of an actress at his suburban Los Angeles mansion is due to start next week.\u003cbr/\u003eZach de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine fame helped to introduce punk icon Patti Smith.\u003cbr/\u003eSmith set the music industry ablaze in 1975 with the release of her album, 'Horses' which set a standard for literate rock.\u003cbr/\u003eShe performed her biggest hit, 'Because the Night,' co-written with Bruce Springsteen, and the Rolling Stones' classic 'Gimme Shelter.' \u003cbr/\u003eAs she accepted induction, Smith recalled friends and family who didn't live to see the day.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My late husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith, of the MC 5 and Sonics Rendezvous band schooled me in a lot of things: to be a better citizen, a good mother, all about the Detroit Red Wings, the tigers,\" Smith said backstage. \"He also taught me how to use my voice better. He was Detroit to me.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Velvet Revolver helped to induct Van Halen.\u003cbr/\u003eOnly Van Halen's second lead singer, Sammy Hagar, and ex-bass player Michael Anthony turned up for their induction. \u003cbr/\u003eGuitarist Eddie Van Halen has just gone into rehab and original lead singer David Lee Roth stayed away in a tiff over what he would perform. \u003cbr/\u003eHagar said he wished his bandmates could be there, but \"it's out of our control.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt took less to keep Roth away. He stood up the hall, reportedly because he couldn't agree on what to sing with the band Velvet Revolver, which offered a tribute. \u003cbr/\u003eGrandmaster Flash and the Furious Five made history with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group is the first rap act to receive the honours.\u003cbr/\u003eRapper and music mogul Jay-Z helped to introduce the artists.\u003cbr/\u003eFlash and the Five are most notably known for their single, 'The Message' which many music critics believe to be one of the best rap songs ever made.\u003cbr/\u003eLike Flash and the Five, many think R.E.M. changed music history with the release of one single. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1981 the band released 'Radio Free Europe' which some believe represented the birth of alternative music.\u003cbr/\u003eFor R.E.M.'s member's Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills, the induction ceremony is a reunion of sorts.\u003cbr/\u003eDrummer Bill Berry quit the band in the late 90s, but joined the group to accept the Hall of Fame honours.\u003cbr/\u003eIt seems only fitting that R.E.M. be inducted into the class of 2007 - the same year their idol Patti
