Mandela lays wreath on Biko's grave\u003cbr/\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eAn unveiling ceremony on the 20th anniversary of Steve Biko's death was delayed on\u003cbr/\u003eFriday by protesters angry that the bronze statue of the South African black leader was  made by a white artist.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Nelson Mandela sat waiting to give his speech as hundreds of black  members of the radical Azanian Student Association shouted and chanted to disrupt  proceedings.\u003cbr/\u003eCrowds line the rooftops in East London, South Africa, waiting for a unveiling ceremony  to mark the 20th anniversary of Steve Biko's death.\u003cbr/\u003eOrdinary people and celebrities, here to pay their respects to Biko -- one of the leading  black figures in South Africa at a time when many anti-apartheid figureheads were in  prison, or in exile.\u003cbr/\u003eHe died in police detention in Port Elizabeth, in 1977, aged 30.\u003cbr/\u003eJournalist and friend of Biko, Donald Woods, wrote \"Cry Freedom\" depicting the  activist's life, later made into a hugely successful film.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd rock star Peter Gabriel wrote a song \"Biko\" -- to highlight the young leader's death.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was unfortunate that a supposedly solemn occasion was disrupted by black radical  students, angry that the artist who had sculpted the statue was white, not black.\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Nelson Mandela's speech was delayed until the crowd calmed down.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen he finally spoke, it was to praise Biko's -- and others' -- love of their country, and  their people.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Today's occasion speaks of our determination to preserve the memories of our heroes  and heroines. centre of the controversy, Naomi  Jacobson, from Namibia.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was an odd finish to a week of drama and emotion involving Biko and his death.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo days of hearings this week before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission  revealed chilling details.\u003cbr/\u003eHow police beat Biko to the point of brain damage, then left him chained for 24 hours  before calling a doctor.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the day, Mandela also unveiled a bronze bust of Biko at the barren graveyard  where Biko was buried.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd laid a wreath on Biko's
