whether it was damaged or not - was not immediately known. \u003cbr/\u003eA radio signal received from the Martian surface suggested that it landed with its base petal on the ground - the best position.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Mars Pathfinder was expected to be out of contact with Earth for up to three to four hours before landing.\u003cbr/\u003eThis was a tense time for the scientific team in at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which hoped the spacecraft would make a safe landing. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring this period all the probe's systems were controlled by onboard software.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cruise stage, which brought the spacecraft from Earth, would have been jettisoned half an hour before landing. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral minutes before landing the spacecraft entered the outer fringes of the atmosphere, 125 kilometres (80 miles) above the surface.\u003cbr/\u003eA precise angle of entry of 14 point 8 degrees was required - any shallower and the craft would skip off the atmosphere, any steeper and it would descend too quickly.\u003cbr/\u003eA specially designed heatshield prevented the probe from burning up as it entered the atmosphere. \u003cbr/\u003eThis was jettisoned once the craft's parachute unfolded.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lander was then lowered on the end of cable.\u003cbr/\u003eAirbags were inflated about eight seconds before landing, at a height of 300 metres (328 yards).\u003cbr/\u003e12 metres (13 yards) above the surface rockets fired, slowing the crafts descent to a virtual standstill.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cord was cut and the lander hit the surface and then bounced, before coming to a halt.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was expected to bounce at least 12 metres (13 yards) above the ground and cover 100 to 200 metres (109 yards to 218 yards) each bounce.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce the craft settled, explosives caused the lander petals to open.\u003cbr/\u003eContact was then re-established with Earth, before other sensing devices were deployed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rover robot has yet to leave the lander and set off to explore the Martian surface.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will hopefully send back pictures as well as information about the Martian weather and soil, of which samples will be taken and analysed.\u003cbr/\u003eComputer graphics\u003cbr/\u003e1.
