Various shots of band practising\u003cbr/\u003eThey're regulars on MTV Indonesia, fans accost them when they are out and their debut album smashed into Indonesia's top 10 - but Debu is hardly a typical American pop export.\u003cbr/\u003eThe band's 17 members are all Muslims, and their songs of love and peace are making a big splash in the world's most populous Islamic country where religious extremism, terrorism and anti-American sentiment are on the rise.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are doing it for Allah,\" said Washington DC-native Najib Ali, the band's manager, web site designer and drummer. \"The music is just a vehicle to convey an important message, namely that in Islam everyone is protected and there is peace.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDebu's sound is a heady mix of Middle Eastern strings, thumping drums, flutes, violins, a harp and other Indonesian instruments picked up on their travels through the archipelago. \u003cbr/\u003eThe band is made up of 10 women and 7 men. Most of them join in with the singing, belting out the words in a mixture of Indonesian, Arabic and English. \u003cbr/\u003eFifteen of the group's members are American citizens, hailing from different parts of the country. They formed the band four years ago after visiting Indonesia along with their spiritual guru, Syekh Fattaah.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough they have never released a record outside Indonesia, Debu is hopeful of finding a following among America's own growing Muslim community.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our music is without limits, it moves,\" said Kumay Mustafa, the band's lead singer and arranger. \"What we try to do is make a combination of different sounds to make something universal.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe band's popularity underscores a growing Muslim revival in Indonesia, where the practice and observance of Islam is generally less rigid than in Middle Eastern countries. \u003cbr/\u003eMade up of four families of mixed ethnic backgrounds, Debu live in three large houses in a suburb of South Jakarta, at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac lined with banana trees. The band's stay in Indonesia is sponsored by a large Islamic foundation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group practices in one of the houses. Rehearsals are a family affair, with children banging on drums, shaking tambourines or dancing around the studio. \u003cbr/\u003eAll the band are Sufis, a mystical branch of Islam that emphasizes the allegorical nature of the Koran. Its followers strive for direct, personal experience of God through meditation and self-discipline, normally under the guidance of a teacher.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike mainstream Muslims, many Sufis believe music and dance can be used as tools to get closer to God, and as a way of spiritual cleansing.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Singing the songs over and over again is kind of like scrubbing a dirty pan,\" said Mustafa, who comes from the American state of Oregon. \"Your heart is that dirty pan.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWestern groups, mostly boy bands or rock groups, have long been favourites among Indonesian teenagers. But a western musical group spreading Islam is a first.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, the clip of the band's latest single was on repeat play on MTV Indonesia. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir debut album, \"Drunk with Love\", has sold more than 50-thousand copies, earning it enough to break Indonesia's top ten, according to its record
