That's why the IOC (International Olympic Committee) puts pressure on us to deliver everything way ahead of the schedule,\" Eduardo Paes said.\u003cbr/\u003eWorld Cup preparations have been plagued by setbacks including cost overruns, stadium delays, accidents, labour strife and huge street protests in the run-up to the June tournament, once envisioned as a coming-out party for South America's largest nation.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople in Rio de Janeiro were surveying the damage to their city on October 16th after historical buildings, banks, consulates, and public property were all targeted by small groups of violent protesters.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands had gathered on October 15th to support public school teachers on strike for higher wages and better work conditions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe demonstrations became violent after hundreds of masked members of the so-called Black Bloc anarchist group started hurling fuel bombs, rocks, bottles and pieces of wood at police who had accompanied the protest marches. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople arriving for work on October 16th were dismayed by the destruction to buildings and businesses.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I approve of the protests because I'm against the government's stance, but I disapprove of this vandalism,\" said security guard Celso Evangelista.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violence and destruction could be seen on all the front pages of the newspapers on October 16th.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm upset because is not pleasant for a carioca (people native to Rio) to see this.
