Under a blazing afternoon sun...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eAmerican endurance athlete Diana Nyad launched another bid on Saturday to set an open-water record by swimming 103 miles (166 kilometres) between Havana and the Florida Keys without a protective shark cage. \u003cbr/\u003eUnder a blazing afternoon sun at the Hemingway Marina in the Cuban capital, Nyad adjusted her cap and goggles, pointed to the open water, blew a bugle and shouted \"courage!\" \u003cbr/\u003eThen she leaped in feet first and stroked out toward her support boat.\u003cbr/\u003eNyad is attempting a feat that would daunt even the fittest of human beings less than a week before her sixty-third birthday. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is also a feat that she failed to accomplish twice last summer, due to an asthma attack and dangerous jellyfish stings. \u003cbr/\u003eNyad had originally planned to begin her swim on Sunday, but upcoming bad weather forced her to unexpectedly leave Cuba sooner.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What used to be Wednesday's forecast is now Tuesday's forecast, so we want to get out of here,\" Nyad told reporters. \u003cbr/\u003eShe expects to take at least 60 hours to complete the swim.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I know how difficult it is. There's a reason no one's ever done it. But I'm prepared,\" Nyad said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think the team is 100 percent prepared. I may suffer some. I'm prepared for that, too,\" she continued.\u003cbr/\u003eA 50-person support team including navigators, weather gurus and a shark handler from Australia were accompanying Nyad on five vessels. \u003cbr/\u003eShe planned to take short, periodic breaks for rest and nourishment.\u003cbr/\u003eIn lieu of a cage, a kayaker will paddle alongside dangling an apparatus in the water that creates an electrical field designed to repel sharks. \u003cbr/\u003eA team of shark handlers will carefully scan the surrounding waters from the roof of her main support boat, ready to dive in and gently nudge away any predators that make it through the shield.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
