Close-up of rifle\u003cbr/\u003eDozens of Fatah gunmen firing in the air on Thursday forced the Palestinian deputy prime minister from the rival Hamas group to cut short a meeting, security officials and gunmen said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe incident in the West Bank town of Tulkarem came against growing tensions between the new ruling party Hamas and the defeated Fatah movement.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Deputy Prime Minister, Nasser Shaer, was meeting with the governor of the Tulkarem district when the building was surrounded by gunmen loyal to Fatah.\u003cbr/\u003eShaer was taken out of the building under police escort, said a Palestinian security official.\u003cbr/\u003eA reporter, speaking to the official by phone, heard gunshots in the background.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent Fatah offshoot, said Hamas officials were not welcome in Tulkarem and that Shaer had been removed from the building \"by force.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on Thursday, thousands of Palestinian police loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas paraded in the streets of Gaza City in a show of force, a day after the Hamas-led government deployed its own 3,000-strong army of militants.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday the government announced it was activating a new Palestinian security unit made up of militants - despite President Mahmoud Abbas vetoing it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe announcement increased tension between Hamas and Abbas' Fatah Party and came just hours after two Hamas militants were killed in mysterious drive-by shootings in Gaza.\u003cbr/\u003eMarching near the Hamas-backed gunmen, the policemen chanted: \"We are the authority. We salute Abu Mazen (Abbas).\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hamas militants did not react as police ran through the streets and conducted drills near Hamas patrols.\u003cbr/\u003eThe policemen were unarmed, but were followed by commanders in jeeps, their weapons raised in the air.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Jerusalem, the president, the homeland,\" the officers chanted, clapping and whistling. Hamas supporters watched from a distance.\u003cbr/\u003eGeneral Suleiman Hilles, commander of Palestinian security forces in the West Bank and Gaza, said in a statement that the forces were deployed to send a message that the Palestinian police is the only side that can maintain law and order.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso in Gaza City, hours after the Hamas government announcement, the presence of Palestinian security forces out on patrol increased.\u003cbr/\u003eLater on Thursday Abbas told the Hamas-led government it must immediately remove its new security forces from the streets of Gaza, a top Abbas aide said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hamas-led government and Abbas have been wrangling over power since the Islamic militant group took power in late March. \u003cbr/\u003eA key area of dispute is control over the security forces. As president, Abbas wields considerable power and carries the title of commander of the security forces.\u003cbr/\u003eThree of the six security branches report to the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry, but Abbas has placed one of his loyalists in a commanding position of the most important of the three branches. \u003cbr/\u003eIn response, Hamas last month announced the creation of a special unit to be made up of former militants. Abbas has vetoed the formation of the unit, seen largely as Hamas' private army.\u003cbr/\u003eIn direct defiance of Abbas' veto, Interior Minister Said Siyam, of Hamas, announced on Wednesday that the unit would begin operations immediately. \u003cbr/\u003eThe unit is to be headed by Jamal Abu Samhadaneh, a militant high on Israel's wanted
