(Aug. 14)\u003cbr/\u003eA team of six suicide bombers launched a coordinated assault on a provincial governor''s compound in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, according to officials. \u003cbr/\u003e  22 people were killed in the attack, in the Parwan provincial capital of Charikar, some 30 miles (50 kilometres) north of Kabul, authorities said. \u003cbr/\u003e  The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest in a series of high-profile assaults on prominent Afghan government officials.\u003cbr/\u003e  Afghan police said the assault began with a car bomb outside the front gate. \u003cbr/\u003e  The blast blew open a hole in the wall, allowing five insurgents wearing suicide vests and carrying automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades to rush into the compound.\u003cbr/\u003e  Afghan police said they killed three of the attackers as they approached the governor''s house.\u003cbr/\u003e  The attack appeared to target a meeting of top provincial security officials that was taking place in the compound. \u003cbr/\u003e  Parwan Governor Abdul Basir Salangi was at the meeting, along with Afghan National Police General Abdul Jalil Rahimi, top provincial Afghan army and police officials, and at least two NATO police advisers.\u003cbr/\u003e  Salangi, a former rebel commander during the Russian occupation, said he fired at the insurgents with his own machine gun. \u003cbr/\u003e  \"My colleagues and I took AK-47s and started fighting with them and shot them, we did not leave the office.
