Pro gay marriage protesters \u003cbr/\u003eA federal appeals court put same-sex weddings in California on hold indefinitely on Monday while it considers the constitutionality of the state's gay marriage ban.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision, issued by a three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, trumped a lower court judge's order that would have allowed county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eLawyers for the two gay couples that challenged the ban said on Monday they would not appeal the panel's decision on the stay to the US Supreme Court. \u003cbr/\u003eThey said they were satisfied the appeals court had agreed to expedite its consideration of the Proposition 8 case by scheduling oral arguments for the week of December 6 (2010).\u003cbr/\u003eReactions to the move were mixed in San Francisco.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We're extremely disappointed that same-sex couples will again have to wait to be able to marry the person they love,\" said Geoff Kors, Equality California Executive Director.\u003cbr/\u003e\"But the good news is, the court expedited the proceedings. they had argued that sanctioning same-sex unions while the case was on appeal would create legal chaos if the ban was  eventually upheld.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the timetable laid out on Monday, it was doubtful a decision would come down from the 9th Circuit before next year.\u003cbr/\u003eA different three-judge panel than the one that issued Monday's decision will be assigned to decide the constitutional question that many believe will\u003cbr/\u003eeventually end up before the Supreme Court and further delay a final outcome.\u003cbr/\u003eCounty clerks throughout the state had been preparing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples for the first time since Proposition 8 passed in November 2008. \u003cbr/\u003eThe measure amended the California Constitution to overrule a state Supreme Court ruling that legalised same-sex unions earlier that year.\u003cbr/\u003eOne same-sex couple in San Francisco likened their \"journey to marriage equality\" to a trip on a roller US District Court Judge Vaughn Walker had ordered state officials to stop enforcing Proposition 8 beginning late on Wednesday afternoon after ruling on 4 August that the ban violated the equal protection and due process rights of gays and lesbians guaranteed under the US Constitution.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ban's backers appealed that ruling and also asked the 9th Circuit to block same-sex weddings in the meantime. \u003cbr/\u003eThey claimed in papers filed with the 9th Circuit that gay marriages would harm the state's interest in promoting responsible procreation through heterosexual marriage.\u003cbr/\u003eWalker presided over a 13-day trial earlier this year that was the first in federal court to examine if states can prohibit gays from getting married without violating the constitutional guarantee of equality.       \u003cbr/\u003eCurrently, same-sex couples can legally wed only in Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Washington,
