Pan of maternity ward\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Children's agency UNICEF publishes the state of World's Children Report 2009 on January 15. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year the report, which focuses on maternal and newborn health, says on average, each day around 1500 women worldwide die from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 99 per cent of these deaths occurred in developing countries - the vast majority in Africa and Asia. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report also says that a child born in a least developed country is almost 14 times more likely to die during the first 28 days of life than one born in an industrialised country. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Uganda four children in every ten will die within the first month of life,  according to local health care workers. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UNICEF report says that in Eastern and Southern Africa 41 babies in every 1,000 born will die before it is 28 days old. \u003cbr/\u003eThe data also reveals that the maternal mortality ratio for the region is 760 per 100,000 live births. \u003cbr/\u003ePoverty and poor access to healthcare is a major factor to the new born mortality rate in Uganda.\u003cbr/\u003eOlive Nsubuga, Head of the Neo-natal unit for the Ministry of Health-Uganda estimates that four in ten child deaths in Uganda are newborns. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says that many deaths occur in the early neonatal (shortly after birth/ first month of life) period and often result from obstructed labour or haemorrhage - both are linked to a delay in mothers accessing health care.\u003cbr/\u003eTraditional birth attendants (TBAs) often deliver babies and offer aftercare of newborns to women in small villages.\u003cbr/\u003eLack of funding and the long distance required to reach healthcare facilities usually means a TBA is a mother's only choice.\u003cbr/\u003eAnnet Nalumansi recalls how the bad judgement of a TBA led to the death of her child. \u003cbr/\u003e \"The baby I gave birth to had an extra finger. birth attendant says the hospitals are too far away and when women go into labour they need local help. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to official figures, only 48% of mothers give birth in official health facilities. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditional birth attendants are often an integral part of the community. \u003cbr/\u003eSister Batani Agnes is the head of the Maternity unit at Iganga District Hospital. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says many newborns die because mothers accept traditional medicine in the villages and only come to official medical facilities once they are experiencing problems - by which time it is too late to save the child.\u003cbr/\u003eUNICEF'S state of World's Children Report 2009 says that in 2005, 536,000 women died from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe report found that three quarters of all maternal deaths occur from complications either during delivery or in the immediate post-partum period. \u003cbr/\u003eThese complications include: haemorrhage (25% of maternal deaths); infections (15%); unsafe abortion (13 %); eclampsia or related hypertensive disorders (12 %); and obstructed labour (8%).\u003cbr/\u003eSome 86 percent of newborn deaths globally are the direct result of three main causes: 1) infections, including sepsis/pneumonia, tetanus and diarrhea, 2) asphyxia, and 3) preterm births. \u003cbr/\u003e Infections account for 36 percent of all newborn deaths.\u003cbr/\u003e Asphyxia causes 23 percent of newborn deaths.\u003cbr/\u003e�Preterm birth causes 27 percent of newborn deaths. \u003cbr/\u003eKeyword
