announced on Thursday - could advance the search for another Earthlike world that may support life.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was Susan Terebey who found what may be an image of a rogue planet that had been ejected from a double star system some 450 light years away from Earth. \u003cbr/\u003eA light year is six (tr) trillion miles (nine point seven trillion kilometres).\u003cbr/\u003eThe Californian astronomer's discovery came by accident.\u003cbr/\u003eShe was studying infrared camera images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of a double star system in the constellation called Taurus. \u003cbr/\u003eA pinpoint of light some 130 (b) billion miles (209 billion kilometres) from the stars caught her attention. \u003cbr/\u003eTerebey noticed that it seemed to be connected to the parent stars by an illuminated\u003cbr/\u003efilament of gas and dust. \u003cbr/\u003eThe astronomer concluded the pinpoint of light was a runaway planet, two to three times the size of Jupiter, that had been ejected from the double star system. \u003cbr/\u003eAs it hurtled away, perhaps at speeds of 20-thousand mph (32-thousand-185 kph), it created the wispy filament, which captured and glowed with light from the twin stars.\u003cbr/\u003eTerebey believes that the runaway planet, which she called TMR-1C, may have formed around one of the stars and that its orbit was upset by the nearby second star. \u003cbr/\u003eThis could have caused it to \"slingshot\" away from the double star system. \u003cbr/\u003eThe astronomer says the planet is much too hot to support life, but believes the discovery is an important advance for a basic human urge: to find life beyond the Earth.\u003cbr/\u003eNASA says that a rigorous peer review of Terebey's findings strongly supports her interpretation of the image as a planet.\u003cbr/\u003eBut officials point out that more sightings are needed for absolute confirmation.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the object's identification is confirmed, it would become the first planet beyond the solar system to be sighted and photographed. \u003cbr/\u003eThe presence of at least eight other planets has been implied by other researchers who\u003cbr/\u003edetected a distinctive wobble of the parent stars.\u003cbr/\u003eIt also would be the first planet discovered by a woman.\u003cbr/\u003eDiscovery of other planets have been credited to male astronomers.\u003cbr/\u003eSpace \u0026amp; Washington D-C, USA \u003cbr/\u003e1.
