his alleged admission that he bribed Ecuadorian lawmakers to ratify a 1998 peace accord with Peru. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a recently published book by Spanish Judge Baltazar Garzon, the magistrate wrote that Montesinos confided to him during an October 2002 jailhouse interview that he paid Ecuadorian lawmakers 20 million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, Montesinos - who has filed a libel suit against Garzon - gave the Ecuadorian officials \"a large quantity of documentation,\" purportedly showing that Garzon fabricated the alleged statements, according to Victor Hugo Sicuret, a member of Ecuador''s Constitutional Tribunal. \u003cbr/\u003eSicuret and his fellow commission members spoke to reporters outside the maximum-security naval base prison where Montesinos has been held since his capture in 2001. \u003cbr/\u003eGarzon is best known for his failed attempt to extradite former dictator General Augusto Pinochet from London in 1998 and put him on trial in Spain for human rights abuses committed in Chile. \u003cbr/\u003eThe payoffs mentioned in his book allegedly cleared the way for the historic treaty Peru and Ecuador signed on October 26, 1998, ending a long-standing territorial dispute that erupted into border wars in 1941,  1985 and 1995. \u003cbr/\u003eThe book has caused a stir in Ecuador, and prompted President Lucio Gutierrez last week appointed the high-level commission to travel to Peru to investigate. \u003cbr/\u003eMontesinos, who is serving a 15-year prison sentence for various corruption convictions, was the behind-the-scenes power broker during Fujimori''s 10-year autocratic government. \u003cbr/\u003eHis career ended after the broadcast of a now-famous video in September 2000 showing him paying a newly elected opposition congressman 15,000 US dollars to back the government - a bribe that precipitated Fujimori''s downfall. \u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of other incriminating videos emerged later. \u003cbr/\u003eMontesinos still faces dozens of trials for charges ranging from arms dealing to Colombian guerrillas and cocaine trafficking to directing a death squad in the early 1990s. \u003cbr/\u003eFujimori fled to Japan and has been
