eight cities line up for experimental swine flu shots in a race to get a vaccine out in case the new flu virus regains strength this fall and winter.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral sites across the United States, including St. Louis, Missouri, Atlanta, Georgia, and the University of Iowa have been selected to participate in the study.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 2,800 people will participate in the government-led studies. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore, Dr Wilbur Chen, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Centre for Vaccine Development is in charge of a portion of the study.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This study is trying to evaluate what are the optimal doses to get antibody responses for protection for individuals,\" he added.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the patients will receive one size dosage and another group will receive a double size dosage to determine which provides the maximum amount of protection, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter receiving the inoculations, patients will be asked to keep a diary on how they feel.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also will receive two, four and six month checkups to monitor progress of the vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003eHealth officials expect to have about 160 million doses available in autumn, with the first batch sometime in\u003cbr/\u003eSeptember. \u003cbr/\u003eThe studies will test the safety and effectiveness of vaccines developed by drug makers and help determine dosage and whether it can be given with a seasonal flu shot.\u003cbr/\u003eParticipants will be given different combinations of two swine flu vaccines made by drug makers Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited and a seasonal flu vaccine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe clinical trial at the University of Maryland will be conducted in two sessions, 21 days apart.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists believe that two separate doses of the vaccine will be needed to prevent catching the flu during the winter.\u003cbr/\u003eLinda Wadsworth, a paediatric nurse, gave the first injection to patients in the Baltimore study.  \u003cbr/\u003eShe also has agreed to take part in the study and has received her first injection.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The process of immunising people unexpectedly high numbers of patients suffered a paralyzing condition called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile it's not clear the vaccine was to blame, the government wants to carefully
