Video clip from past IIFA award ceremonies \u003cbr/\u003eThe International Indian Film Academy, or IIFA, unveiled its plans on Wednesday (30 APR) to hold its 2008 Award programme in Bangkok in June 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will be the ninth destination since 2000, when the show went to London, in an attempt to spread the appeal of Indian cinema. \u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers held a press conference in Bangkok to stress the benefits that the host city would reap from their Awards weekend. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral Indian films were shot in Thailand last year, bringing revenue of $20 million to the kingdom. $7 million worth of advertisements were filmed here in 2007 as well. \u003cbr/\u003eWizcraft Director Sabbas Joseph, whose firm produces the event, praised a gala weekend that would wow Thais and visitors alike. The IIFA presentation was an attempt to stir up excitement in a country where Bollywood cinema has only a cult following.\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday's event featured dancers, plaque presentations, graphics showing the events appeal and much more. The highlight was hearing from Indian cinema legend Amitabh Bachchan, who talked about cinema as a force for peace and harmony in today's conflict-ridden world. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother highlight was the unveiling of the nominees for best picture in this year's awards. \u003cbr/\u003eThe films up for awards include \"Chak De India\" starring Kabir Khan which is a film about field hockey.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Jab We Met,\" a romantic comedy starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in their fourth film together, is also nominated, as is \"Guru\", which, fitting in with the IIFA's effort for international appeal, opened in Toronto early last year. \u003cbr/\u003eShilpa Shetty, who came to international fame after suffering racial insults in Britain's Celebrity Big Brother show, and later for being kissed by Richard Gere, starred in another nominated film \"Life in a Metro\". \u003cbr/\u003e\"Om Shanti Om\" which features a slew of 1970's era Indian film stars was also nominated. As was \"Partners\", a romantic comedy with a plot that mirrors Will Smith's Hollywood movie \"Hitch\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe movie most talked about at Wednesday's event, however, is \"Sarkar Raj\", Ram Gopal Varma's new film starring Aishwarya Rai, which will have it's premiere at the Awards weekend. \u003cbr/\u003eVarma hopes that his film will eventually get a theatrical release in Thailand, something no Hindi film has done thus far. This is a goal that Sabbas Joseph noted in his speech as well. On Aishwarya Rai's performance in his film Varma said:\u003cbr/\u003e\"When I started working with her I was quite stunned to see the range of her performance.
