Sign to hospital\u003cbr/\u003eTwo U-S soldiers were killed and nine injured in a gunfight early on Tuesday in the Iraqi town of Fallujah. \u003cbr/\u003eA helicopter which came in to rescue the soldiers came under fire and crashed. \u003cbr/\u003eIraqis say the helicopter was shot-down, but US spokesmen say the aircraft crashed after a collision.\u003cbr/\u003eA statement from the US Central Command said two unidentified attackers were killed during the fighting, and six captured. \u003cbr/\u003eFallujah is a hotbed of support for Saddam Hussein's fallen Ba'ath Party.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the attack a group of local men gathered at the scene and praised the attackers. \u003cbr/\u003eA US army vehicle arrived to take away the damaged helicopter soon after the incident but the locals waved bits of debris they said had come from the helicopter. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the men said the helicopter had been shot down by Islamic fighters, but Major Randy Martin, a spokesman for the U.S. Army's V Corps, said it was damaged when a Bradley armoured vehicle struck it while maneuvering into a firing position.\u003cbr/\u003eThe men chanted anti-US slogans and said they were subjected to routine humiliation at the hands of the US troops in the town. \u003cbr/\u003eThe attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and small arms in the attack, a statement from U.S. Central Command said.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the U.S. soldiers hit were from the 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment, based in Fort Carson, Colorado, Martin said.\u003cbr/\u003eInitial reports said the attackers fired from a mosque within in the city, 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Baghdad.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Martin said the Americans hit were at a traffic-control point just after midnight with gunfire from occupants of one of two vehicles that had pulled into the checkpoint together.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. soldiers were searching the first vehicle and had just found weapons inside when the occupants of the accompanying vehicle opened fire and threw a grenade.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. troops responded with fire from Bradley Fighting Vehicles, machine guns and small arms. They killed two of the attackers and captured six others, the statement said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wounded soldiers were evacuated to a military aid station in the area. \u003cbr/\u003eThe names of the two dead soldiers were not immediately released.\u003cbr/\u003eU.S. occupying forces have run into trouble before in Fallujah, whose 200,000 people benefited greatly from Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath
