Santa waving \u003cbr/\u003eThe 82nd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade made its way through Manhattan streets under sunny skies on Thursday, as thousands of marchers carried giant balloons past throngs of people celebrating the US harvest holiday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe atmosphere along the route was upbeat and jovial  and parade celebrities included Miley Cyrus, star of the television show \"Hannah Montana\". \u003cbr/\u003eNew balloons this year were Buzz Lightyear, the square-jawed, action-figure astronaut from the 1995 film \"Toy Story,\" Horton, the compassionate elephant of Dr. Seuss books, and a Smurf, a blue, gnome-like creature.\u003cbr/\u003eThe parade also was to feature 28 floats, 10 marching bands and performances by Miley Cyrus, Trace Adkins, James Taylor and the Radio City Rockettes.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers said more than a (m) million spectators viewed the 82nd annual parade in person, with another 50 (m) million watching on television.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 2.5-mile parade route winds from Central Park West and West 77th Street to Herald Square, in front of Macy's flagship store.\u003cbr/\u003eMacy's is marking its 150th anniversary this year. \u003cbr/\u003eThe temperature was around 41 degrees with a wind of around 7 mph (11.5 kph), well below city guidelines for grounding the balloons. \u003cbr/\u003eThose protocols were established after 45 mph winds drove a Cat in the Hat balloon into a metal pole during the 1997 parade, leaving a woman in a coma. \u003cbr/\u003eThe balloons were lowered to a maximum of 17 feet on a stormy Thanksgiving Day 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eThe parade, which began in 1924, was cancelled for two years during World War II. \u003cbr/\u003eBesides watching Thanksgiving Day parades, millions of Americans
