population.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Sundarbans is the largest mangrove in the world and home to the Royal Bengal tiger.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the uproar last year over the disappearance of tigers from other Indian reserves due to excessive poaching, authorities set up a Tiger Task Force to recommend steps for the conservation of the species.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the last census, there were 249 tigers in the 2,585 square kilometre (1,000-square-mile) Sundarbans reserve. \u003cbr/\u003eThe task force has suggested using a variety of scientific methods to verify this figure.\u003cbr/\u003eThe traditional method for counting tiger numbers has been by taking plaster casts of the animals' pugmarks (paw prints).\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, the census in Sundarbans will be an elaborate exercise involving four phases that will take about six months. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the first phase, that ends on 10 January 2006, signs of different wildlife will be observed by 35 teams of forest guards and members of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). \u003cbr/\u003eThe second phase will gather information related to the tiger reserve through satellite imagery - such as livestock on the fringes of the park, habitation and human pressure.\u003cbr/\u003ePhase three will attempt to determine tiger density per hundred-square-kilometre (-mile) using cameras, radio collars and other gadgets.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the data gathered from the three phases will be co-related in the fourth phase.\u003cbr/\u003eSimilar census operations are being conducted at other tiger reserves in the country and initial reports indicate a decline of 150 tigers.\u003cbr/\u003eIndian newspapers have reported that there may be only 3,200 to 3,500 tigers left in the
