It was very delicate, smooth and embroidered as well. This pottery model is of a right leg boot, which is obvious from the shape of the sole. It has a beautiful carved ornament, typical of the classic Vucedol culture. The ornament is filled with white incrustation, a paste coating derived from crumbled shells and snails. This vessel has thin linings, with two small holes at the edges on each side, so it was easily hangable. We are not sure about its exact usage, but it undoubtedly served as a model, a representation of how the little boot of Vucedol culture really looked.\"\u003cbr/\u003e15. of Vukovar.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pottery model of a boot is thought to be a replica of a child's shoe that would have been worn around 2,700 BC\u003cbr/\u003eNow, an exhibition dedicated to the boot has been opened at  the Vukovar City Museum.\u003cbr/\u003eVukovar, the most damaged city in the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s, has recently become a must see location for history fans.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reason is a 5000-year-old boot which was discovered a few months ago on an archaeological site near the city.\u003cbr/\u003eStanding 10.8 centimetres tall (4.3 inches) , it was crafted in 2700 BC and has ornaments characteristic of the  Vucedol culture. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Vucedol culture dates back to between 2800 and 2400 BC and evolved parallel to Troy, the Sumerians and the Ancient Egyptians. \u003cbr/\u003eThe boot's  length (12.8 cm / 5 inches) corresponds to the European child size 19 - that is footwear for a 1-year-old.\u003cbr/\u003eThis valuable historical finding was discovered in September 2007 by Vukovar archaeologist Mirela Hutinec, who has been researching Vucedol for seven years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe boot was hidden merely 80cms (31.5 inches) beneath the ground in the remains of a Vucedol house.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Vukovar City Museum had been working in exile in Zagreb for seven years.\u003cbr/\u003e After the reintegration of occupied territory it returned to Vukovar in 1998. \u003cbr/\u003eNow it's located in the still devastated castle Eltz, where the exhibition \"The Story of the Vucedol Boot\" has been set up.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's still not clear if the boot was a decoration, relic or model crafted for making Vucedol boots. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ornaments on the boot were made by carving into fresh clay and were filled with paste made by grinding shells and snail shells from the nearby Danube. \u003cbr/\u003eThe boot had two holes at the top. \u003cbr/\u003e Hutinec believes this might have been to allow it to be hung on a wall. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Vucedol people had a very organised community and clear division of work. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople who were occupied with making boots this sophisticated could not have spent their days hunting, believes Mirela Hutines. \u003cbr/\u003eIvica Levicki, designer for the Vukovar leather footwear factory Borovo, has designed three leather boot models for the  exhibition based on the ceramic original. \u003cbr/\u003eThe reconstruction shows the footwear worn by the Vucedol people five thousand years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eLevacki says the ornaments on the boot show very precise craftsmanship  adding that the boot is still wearable by today's standards.\u003cbr/\u003eHead of the city museum  Ruza Maric says she hopes the find will urge visitors to discover more about  the Vucedol culture as a whole.\u003cbr/\u003e She adds that  the Vucedol boot has become recognised as the new symbol of Vukovar.\u003cbr/\u003eVukovar children from the local
