Wide of Saint Catherine Church during concert \u003cbr/\u003eItalian artists and musicians are bringing a message of peace to Bethlehem ahead of Christmas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe festival of traditional arts and crafts is designed to boost the morale of West Bank residents during the holiday season, at a time when tensions with Israel continue to simmer over Jewish settlements and the West Bank barrier.\u003cbr/\u003eThe harmonious sounds of classical Italian music are rare in Bethlehem, where modern Middle Eastern music is more to the local's tastes.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, this Christmas, dozens of Italian musicians, artists and craftspeople have descended upon the town of Jesus' birth in a unique pilgrimage that seeks to promote peace through art.\u003cbr/\u003eThe four-day festival of traditional arts and crafts is a journey through Italian artistic traditions, accompanied by the rhythms and colours typical of Mediterranean culture. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We are sure that to invest in these types of initiatives is a real fundamental for the creation of job, for the spirit also, for the mood of the people and especially for the young people,\" says Gianandrea Sandri, director of Italian Cooperation Office in Jerusalem. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the square of Bethlehem's Nativity Church, where the Virgin Mary is believed to have given birth to Jesus, street painters hunch over their interpretations of the Madonna.\u003cbr/\u003eStreet painting has a rich history throughout Europe. \u003cbr/\u003ePainters from Italy are called Madonnari, because they tend to draw the Virgin Mary, known as Madonna in Italian. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Madonnari travel from town to town to participate in local festivities. \u003cbr/\u003eThey set themselves up in public squares and in front of local churches, drawing sacred images on the pavement with coloured chalk.\u003cbr/\u003eArtists in the Nativity square are jubilant about sharing their talents with Palestinians.\u003cbr/\u003e\"To bring such antique art here, in such an old city as this one, where all this was born, the whole idea of this art, it is clearly very emotional and it is revealing itself as a fantastic experience,\" says Stefania Sabino, an artist from Milan.\u003cbr/\u003eGennaro Troia has been a Madonnaro artist for more than 20 years and encourages other street painters to gather and exhibit their talents around Italy and elsewhere. \u003cbr/\u003eHis painting depicts the Virgin Mary with a minaret in the background.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I wanted to paint a picture of the Virgin Mary made by Tiepolo and I wanted to paint behind the Virgin Mary Bethlehem's minaret to give a meaning of peace, union and cooperation,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eOther artists arrived from the small Sicilian town of Salemi, proudly showcasing the creation of their famous decorative bread, traditionally made for the Saint Joseph festivity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Saint Joseph dinners is a Salemi festival, which takes place March 19, when church altars are decorated with handmade decorative bread, wine, fruit and loral branches, as a symbolic representation of the last supper.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents of Bethlehem say they are thankful for the artists' visit, and not only for the sharing of cultures. \u003cbr/\u003eThe biblical city is surrounded by Israel's West Bank barrier and some residents say they are isolated by it from the outside world.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The city of Bethlehem is closed by the wall and for us we are living in a prison and I think through these kind of events is as we are penetrating the wall. If we cannot go outside, the outside world will come to Bethlehem and this is a very nice message,\" says Jihan Anastas, director of the city's Peace Centre, which promotes peace through cultural activities.\u003cbr/\u003eMarking the end of the festival was a special concert, held in the Catholic wing of the Nativity Church, that featured four male performers singing Tenores, a traditional style of a capella music originating in Sardinia. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir sacred lyrics and guttural sounds express religious devotion to Sardinia's saints in important religious ceremonies throughout the year. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2005, the tenor singing was included in UNESCO's list of the World's Intangible Heritage.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the end of the festival, the visiting artists will pack up their materials and return to their homes for their own personal Christmas celebrations.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they'll have given residents here not only a chance to see their work, but also a feeling that a
