The latest dispute over Gibraltar's sovereignty came as Gibraltar's Chief Minister...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eBritain has rejected a proposal by Spain for the two countries to share sovereignty of  the British colony of Gibraltar for up to 100 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe latest dispute over Gibraltar's sovereignty came as Gibraltar's Chief Minister visited  Brussels for talks on the territory's future legal status within the European Union. \u003cbr/\u003eThe British flag will continue to fly alone over the Rock of Gibraltar for the foreseeable  future - despite an attempt to raise a Spanish flag by its side.\u003cbr/\u003eGibraltar's Chief Minister emphatically supported British Foreign Secretary Malcolm  Rifkind's rejection of the proposal of shared sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Well of course we entirely approve and support his rejection in rejecting the proposals  in signifying that they were not acceptable to the British government. he was basing  that in the knowledge that the proposals were entirely unacceptable to the government  and the people of Gibraltar, whose wishes the British government is committed to  respect in this matter, and therefore he was reflecting our wishes and our views and  therefore we entirely applaud and support the firm and immediate rejection by him of the  proposals which are unacceptable to Gibraltar.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Peter Caruana, Chief Minister of Gibraltar\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the proposal - put forth by Spanish Foreign Minister Abel Matutes - the two  countries would share joint sovereignty of the colony at the tip of the Iberian peninsula  for 100 years.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter that, it would be handed over entirely to Spanish sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003eSpain ceded the 5.8-square kilometre (2.25-square mile) colony to Britain in 1713, but  now argues that Britain should no longer hold a colony on the territory of a fellow  European Union member.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain says it will not change Gibraltar's status without consent of its 30-thousand  residents, who widely oppose becoming part of Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eMadrid has treated the island as a disputed territory, pursuing its claim for sovereignty  at every international forum.\u003cbr/\u003eRelations have soured between the two countries -- all borders between the Rock and  Spain have been closed for 16 years.\u003cbr/\u003eRecently British concerns have arisen over a Spanish threat to withdraw recognition of  passports issued in Gibraltar.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week diplomats hinted that Spain intended to with withdraw recognition of Gibraltar  passports as a pressure tactic to regain sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a trip to Madrid to discuss the reports, Rifkind was assured by the Matutes that the  rights of Gibraltar's citizens would not be imposed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He said that Spain reaffirms that it has never questioned nor shall question the right to  free movement of Gibraltarians within the territory of the European Union. This is, I  believe, the kind of assurance which if it means what it says, it means that  Gibraltarians can accept that they are not going to be prevented from movement from  Gibraltar to Spain. This is the only interpretation that I can understand of these words  as they have been presented.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: British Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind\u003cbr/\u003eThe Rock has been hit by crossfire in the tit-for-tat battle over its sovereignty.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Chief Minister of Gibraltar was in Belgium Wednesday to press Gibraltar's status  as a European territory -- a position he says Spain has yet to acknowledge.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Certainly the whole purpose of this trip is to make sure the authorities here in the heart  of the European Union are entirely familiar and aware of the problems Gibraltar faces  when it comes to benefiting from its European Union status, which is that we are an  integral part of the European Union as part of the United kingdom membership.
