I didn't think very far into the future or I didn't think about studying because at that time I had no money. But when I came to Friends they had many jobs for me to choose from and I chose to learn how to cook because I can earn a lot of money doing that so I can improve my life and help my family.\"    \u003cbr/\u003e40. Medium of children playing on the street\u003cbr/\u003eCambodia has one of the highest rates of youth homelessness in Southeast Asia.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil recently, most of these so-called street children were condemned to a life of poverty and exploitation.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now street children in Phnom Penh are being helped to find a brighter future.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than one third of Cambodians live below the poverty line, struggling to survive on less than $1 a day. \u003cbr/\u003ePoverty is especially pervasive in rural areas and among children, who constitute more than half of the country's population according to the United Nations Children's charity UNICEF.\u003cbr/\u003eMany families are unable to cope, forcing thousands of children into a life on the streets.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut now some of these children can dream of a better future, thanks to an NGO called 'Mith Samlang' or 'Friends' in English. \u003cbr/\u003eThese are just some of the 50,000 vulnerable young people Friends have helped since it was set up in 1994.  \u003cbr/\u003eWorldwide Friends International has helped about 130,000 street children across seven countries from Egypt to Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003eToday about 20,000 children are living rough or working on the streets of the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, according to Friends. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Friends concept is to tackle the problem of child homelessness at its roots through education and job training, says Sebastien Marot, the group's founder and Executive Director. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Friends works with marginalised children and young people and the idea is to transform them in productive adults who can help to grow the country. We provide them with education, or help them return to public school, or we teach them professional skills which they can use to get work and help their families. That allows them to reunite with their families again while allowing them to fully participate in the development of the country.\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eFriends outreach programme is one of the keys to its success. \u003cbr/\u003eThe programme seeks to protect children while they are on the streets and to help them build a more stable life. \u003cbr/\u003eFriends councillors work in eight districts of Phnom Penh offering at risk youth emotional support as well as advice on safe sex, drug use or even basic road safety.\u003cbr/\u003eA doctor is always on hand to treat sickness and injury or offer medical advice.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the ultimate aim is to try to encourage vulnerable youths to enter the Friends training programme. \u003cbr/\u003ePhalla Nov has been an outreach councillor with Friends for more than eight years. \u003cbr/\u003eFriends also runs four drop in centres like this one in Phnom Penh where street children can relax or sleep during the day. \u003cbr/\u003eEach home can accommodate up to 80 children, cared for by house parents and social workers and supported by medical staff. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for Friends the main focus is its educational and vocational training programmes most of which take place here at Friends Phnom Penh headquarters. \u003cbr/\u003eA non formal education programme for the youngest street children is designed to help them to reintegrate back into the state school system.\u003cbr/\u003eFor older children 11 vocational training programmes are available which will enable them to earn their way off the streets for good.\u003cbr/\u003eElectrical engineering and motor mechanic classes like these are popular with many boys.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd for girls hair, makeup and beauty courses are on offer. \u003cbr/\u003eFor all of the students at Friends two meals a day are provided free of charge - often the only solid meals that many of them will get. \u003cbr/\u003eIn line with Friends self-help philosophy, the cooks here are themselves former street children .\u003cbr/\u003eAfter learning the basics cooking for their fellow students, many go on to becoming waiting or kitchen staff at one the two Friends restaurants in Phnom Penh where professional instruction is provided. \u003cbr/\u003eThese restaurants, operated and staffed almost entirely by former street children, are an important source of revenue for Friends. \u003cbr/\u003eFriends now funds 44 per cent of its own financial needs directly from business ventures like these.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cooking students are trained in all aspects of the hospitality industry from customer service to accounting. \u003cbr/\u003eStudents learn to cook traditional Cambodian recipes like deep fried spiders in chili sauce.   \u003cbr/\u003eAfter three years of training students will earn a certificate that should enable them to get a good job in one of the capital's many restaurants.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd that's all that most students like Sopha want - a chance to earn an honest living so that they can help themselves and their families.\u003cbr/\u003eThe success of Friends in Cambodia has allowed the company to go global
