Also in a lot of games, you can make many friends, kinds which you may never meet in real life.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Wang Nan, Online Game Player\u003cbr/\u003eThe majority of on-line games played in China are created overseas, particularly in South Korea.\u003cbr/\u003eBut vertical growth in revenues from Chinese on-line gaming - $US400 million this year alone, double last year's - means that's a situation that won't last for long.\u003cbr/\u003eKingsoft in Beijing, started to develop its own Chinese online games four years ago, with considerable success.\u003cbr/\u003eIts \"Legends of Knights Online\" game is played by 80,000 gamers every day - and each of them pays a fee to do so.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in the gaming world, success doesn't come cheaply - this year Kingsoft has tipped $US6 million into research and development.\u003cbr/\u003eEven so, Kingsoft's senior engineer says the company is having to run fast to keep up.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) \u003cbr/\u003e\"What we lack right now is an accumulation of experience - our technology is no lower than foreign companies. I think our advantage in this industry is that our products are more suitable for the Chinese players in respects of both culture and operation habits.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Liu Yujun, Senior Engineer, Kingsoft\u003cbr/\u003eOne stumbling block for China's game development companies is the shortage of trained designers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut, as you might expect, China's doing something about this, too.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is one of its new universities - a college whose curriculum is constructed solely around online gaming.\u003cbr/\u003eThe object is to produce design professionals as fast as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eAnalysts say China will need around 600,000 of them in the next few years - presently there are just 3,000.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) \u003cbr/\u003e\"We want students in the game college, after they finish the courses here, to have enough knowledge of planning, art designing and programming in online games, so that they have good prospects in their future careers.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ma Nan, Game Design Teacher \u003cbr/\u003eThese students will certainly have plenty of employment prospects - there are 300 companies in China designing and producing games.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the successful ones, the reward is phenomenal profits.\u003cbr/\u003eGame revenues are now rivalling those of blockbuster movies. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's not all blue sky.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) \u003cbr/\u003e\"Ninety to ninety-five percent of projects fail and on each project you have to invest at least thirty million Yuan ($US3.64 million) if you want to make it a success. Even with this amount of investment on each project, only 10 percent can be successful. So this is an industry with very big risks.
