The Texas Compact would give the two New England states exclusive rights to store  their waste at a site near the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEnglish/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eThe state of Texas may soon be accepting tons of low-level radioactive waste from  Maine and Vermont. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Texas Compact would give the two New England states exclusive rights to store  their waste at a site near the Texas-Mexico border. \u003cbr/\u003eWith approval from Congress almost assured, opponents are gearing up for one last  fight, hoping to force Maine and Vermont to keep their own waste.\u003cbr/\u003eThe state of Maine is known for its postcard scenery.\u003cbr/\u003eMaine features some of the continental United States' last pristine wilderness. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the state also features one of the region's largest nuclear power plants, the Maine- Yankee facility near Portland.\u003cbr/\u003eThe controversial site provides power to most of the state and many other parts of New  England.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this facility generates something besides energy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Maine-Yankee generates something less than two-thousand cubic feet of low-level  radioactive waste, or the equivalent of about a truckload of waste every other month.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Marshall Murphy, Maine-Yankee Spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eEven that small amount was enough to cause a public outcry against storing Maine- Yankee's low-level nuclear waste in-state.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of negotiations, officials from Maine and Vermont worked out a deal with  Texas to ship their states' waste to a facility near the Texas-Mexico border.\u003cbr/\u003eIn exchange, Texas receives 50 (m) million dollars and an exemption from having to  accept nuclear waste from any other state.\u003cbr/\u003eSupporters of the so-called \"Texas Compact\" say the exemption is one of the feature  attractions of the deal.       \u003cbr/\u003e\"Texas then is free to plan a disposal facility to satisfy its own waste disposal  requirements and, in addition, those requirements that come from generators in Maine  and Vermont. It does not have to worry about any long-term risk of opening its facility  up to the rest of the country.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Stephan Ward, Maine State Advocate   \u003cbr/\u003eBut others say the move is hypocritical, and that Maine and Vermont should store their  own waste.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say the Texas site, located in a poor district, simply  takes advantage of an  underprivileged population.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's fundamentally hypocritical for one area of the country to build a nuclear power  plant, enjoy the short-term benefits of that plant and then pass off the long-term to  another area of the country, particularly when that area is a politically and socially  disadvantaged area.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Bill Linnell, Maine Committee for a Safe Energy Future\u003cbr/\u003eThe Texas Compact still requires Congressional approval. I accept that. The majority does win in a democracy. It doesn't  mean a majority is always right.
