an \"island of\u003cbr/\u003emodernism\" into another Yugoslavia, putting the country at the mercy of nationalist and populist policies.\u003cbr/\u003eThose who want some 2.5 (m) million ethnic Hungarians in Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and other neighbouring countries to be allowed to acquire Hungarian citizenship, say the Socialists are reverting to their communist past.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the issue has deep historical roots - Hungary lost two-thirds of its land and 60 percent of its population when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dismantled after World War I - and emotional weight supporters say giving ethnic Hungarians citizenship would help cure the trauma of Trianon - the 1920 treaty which carved up Hungary - opponents say its consequences are immeasurable, both domestically - where a second round of elections will be held December 12 - threatened to strip ethnic Hungarians of their Romanian citizenship if they tried to acquire Hungarian
