Many values are associated with it. There are many achievements there. A boy who maybe did not succeed in making an ascent the first time, and doesn't succeed a second time as well, the instructor comes and works with him on it, and the third time he succeeds, he experiences success and can take that lesson with him to other spheres in his life.\" \u003cbr/\u003e32. Various of boys cycling\u003cbr/\u003eBedouin boys in Israel are being given bikes with the aim of creating a better future for them and their community.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 'Bikes 4 All' initiative hopes to teach the youngsters discipline and respect.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's bedouin community is one of its poorest. \u003cbr/\u003eThe people here live in impoverished towns in the southern Negev desert and many keep to their traditional ways, living in tents and using camels and donkeys as a means of transportation.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a bid to give Bedouin youth the same opportunities as other youngsters, the Israeli Cycling Federation has donated 800 bicycles to young people in the community. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir goal is to teach the boys discipline and respect and to drive home the concept of ownership. \u003cbr/\u003eInadvertently, they are also giving them an alternative to the traditional donkey.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael is a developed country, but half of all Bedouin live below the poverty line. \u003cbr/\u003eYoung people are a particularly troubled population, many are uneducated and have dim job prospects. \u003cbr/\u003eEyal Hershtik, a project manager from the federation's Bikes 4 All initiative, says that part of the problem is that the Bedouin community isn't actively connected to the Israeli one. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that providing these bikes is a way to make that link, and hopes to eventually set up a competitive team representing the region, as a way to bring Bedouin and Jewish Israelis together.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We set up 25 bicycle clubs here that engaged 800 children today. And eventually we aim to create here a team representing the Abu Basma region in the rest of Israel and to represent the Bedouin community, which is largely unknown, in all of Israel,\" says Hershtik.\u003cbr/\u003eThe boys who received the bikes are all around 14 years old. \u003cbr/\u003eBikes 4 All has trained two dozen instructors to teach the children how to ride their bikes as well as maintain them.\u003cbr/\u003eMahmoud Tarabin, an instructor, believes the opportunity to ride a bike gives his students much more than just exercise.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We teach them responsibility, order, love of the group and my goal is to train the better students for more competition. For now it is just a hobby in our spare time. It also helps them to root out violence and they enjoy themselves very much,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eCrime plagues the Bedouin community, with young people often involved in car thefts or drug dealing. \u003cbr/\u003eMahmoud says a pastime like cycling could help prevent teenagers turning to crime.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bikes are all new and the students are taught of the importance of wearing helmets. \u003cbr/\u003eThey all know how to keep their wheels pumped and Mahmoud teaches them how to fix various parts. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the first stage of the project, they must return the bikes to a local community centre until organisers feel they are ready to become their owners.\u003cbr/\u003eThe children themselves seem more interested in getting on the bikes than maintaining them. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd while they may not fully grasp the lessons they are learning through the activity, they are having fun.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are really happy with these bicycles and we have lots of fun on them, we are really happy with them. And the most important thing is the instructor is nice to us,\" says Abdelatif Tarabin.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Right after the afternoon prayers they do for us several activities and we get the chance to do sports, we get our blood moving and we have fun,\" says Mohammed Tarabin, 14.\u003cbr/\u003eBeyond the lessons learned, the bicycles are part of a continued effort to bring the Bedouin community up to par with the greater Israeli one.\u003cbr/\u003eBedouin have for years relocated to cities and towns from their nomadic communities.\u003cbr/\u003eIn that same way, these children may one day choose the bicycle over the donkey as their preferred mode of transportation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We use the bicycle as a means of moving from place to place, for visiting neighbours and to be able to go to school.
