To us he was an internationalist fighter. The Cuban revolution, everything was talk of revolution in Latin America and even at school - where he known incidentally because he was rather plump kid. He was always known as \"el Gordo\" which I guess translates as fatty. I doubt myself his claims to be a great revolutionary who was anxious to set the worlds to right. I think he takes a positive pleasure in planning murders and he's more like a traditional villain. He's a Mafia man rather than a world revolutionary leader.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ronald Payne, author, The Carlos Complex\u003cbr/\u003eAs a teenager Carlos was sent to London to broaden his horizons, with his mother and brothers.\u003cbr/\u003eThey lived in a variety of places, including this apartment complex in the smart area of Kensington. \u003cbr/\u003eCarlos's father could well afford it - his militant tendencies did not prevent him doing a series of land deals that made him a millionaire.\u003cbr/\u003eIt must have been tempting to slip into the decadent and simple pleasures that London in the Swinging Sixties offered but Carlos was not allowed to indulge in the good life for long.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was sent to Moscow's famous Patrice Lumumba university where he first developed the terrorist connections that were to dominate his life.\u003cbr/\u003eThe university gained a reputation as a networking centre for would-be terrorists and Carlos found himself spending a lot of time with Palestinian students.\u003cbr/\u003eIt took him to Beirut and his first direct contact with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.\u003cbr/\u003eThis man, Bassam Abu-Sharif, recruited Carlos into the efficiently structured terrorist organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eCarlos was trained for two years at P-F-L-P camps in Jordan.\u003cbr/\u003eAbu-Sharif, who now lives in Gaza, recalls Carlos vividly.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: English\u003cbr/\u003e\"He is a very polite man. He likes flowers and likes good wine and beautiful women and he always smiles. At the same time he can shoot without blinking - keeping his smile.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Bassam Abu-Sharif, former spokesman, The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine\u003cbr/\u003eCarlos operated out of this flat in London at the height of his criminal career.\u003cbr/\u003eHe kept an arsenal of weaponry in a bag stashed with a former girlfriend here.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter the killing of two French intelligence officers and an informer in Paris for which he is being tried, the bag was opened by a young Englishman living in the flat.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso discovered was this fake passport which Carlos used to pose as a Chilean businessman. \u003cbr/\u003eHe narrowly escaped being caught then and went on to establish links with organisations as diverse as the Baader Meinhof, the Japanese Red Army and the Spanish Basque separatist movement.\u003cbr/\u003eHe claims to have killed 83 people during his reign of terror.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the flat above a laundry a book by Frederick Forsyth was found - The Day of the Jackal.\u003cbr/\u003eA journalist tagged Carlos as the Jackal and the hunt of the killer began in earnest.\u003cbr/\u003eCaracas, London, Moscow and Gaza.
