(Nov. 8)\u003cbr/\u003e[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]     \u003cbr/\u003eA massive oil spill threatens beaches and wildlife in the San Francisco area.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, a cargo ship bound for South Korea smashed into a tower attached to the Bay Bridge...ripping a hole in the ship's hull and leaking a heavy fuel into the water.\u003cbr/\u003eSOT Capt. William Uberti, captain of the Port of San Francisco: \u003cbr/\u003e\"We have ribbons of oil going all over the place... So far we've recovered 1500 gallons of oil.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJust after the accident, the Coast Guard estimated only 140 gallons had flowed into the Bay,  \u003cbr/\u003ebut now they say 58 thousand gallons actually spilled...\u003cbr/\u003eAnd that's believed to be the area's biggest slick in nearly 20 years.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, officials say it could have been worse.\u003cbr/\u003eSOT Darrell Wilson- represents ship's owner\u003cbr/\u003e\"we regret that this happened, but we are relieved that there were no injuries.  We are fully committed to cooperating with the coast guard and other officials who are helping with this.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt least 8 beaches have been forced to shut down during the cleanup...\u003cbr/\u003eand environmentalists are scrambling to save fish and birds like this one.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was dense fog when the accident happened, but authorities aren't sure what caused the crash.\u003cbr/\u003eThey say the ship's crew has been interviewed and given drug and alcohol tests.\u003cbr/\u003eIf it's found that the pilot of the ship acted negligently he could lose
