Bush the clear choice for re-nomination by the Republican Party, media attention was focused on the race to be chosen as the Democratic Party presidential challenger. Former Vermont state governor Howard Dean was an early favourite, and received a boost when former Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley gave him his support. Retired US Army general Wesley Clark was the only non-career politician among the candidates. Clark, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, had been NATO's supreme commander and had overseen the NATO military campaign in Kosovo to stop Serb attacks on Kosovan-Albanian communities. John Edwards, a first-term North Carolina senator was the only candidate in the race from the South, a region where Republicans had strong support. Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts had the support of the state's senior senator, Ted Kennedy. Support for the one-time favourite Howard Dean started to slip after the Iowa party caucuses and New Hampshire primaries in late January, where Kerry was the surprise winner. Veteran senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut enjoyed some support, but bowed out of the race in February. The consumer advocate Ralph Nader also announced he would run as an independent candidate for the presidency. Some Democrats had blamed Nader for taking votes from their party nominee Al Gore in the 2000 elections.
FILE: Iowa - January 2000
Former Democratic Party presidential candidate Bill Bradley steps out of car, shakes hands
Manchester, New Hampshire - 8 January 2004
Wide shot of Retired US Army General Wesley Clark speaking to a crowd of senior citizens
Des Moines, Iowa - 18 January 2004
Close-up of cheering fans
Close-up of North Carolina Senator John Edwards exiting bus
Close-up John Edwards being introduced to supporters
Waterloo, Iowa - 18 January 2004
Junior Massachusetts senator John Kerry with supporters, and senior Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy introducing Kerry
Davenport, Iowa - 18 January 2004
Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean and wife entering room
Manchester, New Hampshire - 25 January 2004
Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman greeting supporters
Washington DC - 23 February 2004
Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader speaking at the National Press Club
SOUNDBITE (English) Ralph Nader, independent presidential candidate:
"Rejoice that you have another front carrying the ancient but unfulfilled pretensions and aspirations of the Democratic Party."
By the time of the Democratic National Convention in July, Senator John Kerry had the clear lead and was chosen as the party's presidential candidate, with Senator John Edwards as his running mate for the vice-presidency. Delegates cheered and waved red, white and blue placards reading "4 More Years." Polls at this time showed Bush and the Democratic challenger John Kerry almost neck-and-neck in many key states. In his speech to the convention, President Bush criticised Kerry's attitude to the Iraq war and his plans for tax cuts. He cited the September 11 attacks as the cause of his conviction to defend the United States. US Vice President Dick Cheney unleashed a stinging attack on Senator John Kerry at Convention, ridiculing him as a politician who had made a career out of changing his mind.
New York - 31 August 2004
Wide shot of floor of Republican National Convention
Wide shot of signs reading "4 more years"
New York - 2 September 2004
US President George W. Senator Kerry attacked George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney for attacking his accounts of his military service in Vietnam when they had declined to serve in the conflict. Republicans and other opponents of Kerry accused him of embellishing his military profile. Bush and Kerry met in a series of three televised public debates that were seen as a key opportunity for Kerry to put his message to voters. Opinion polls indicated Kerry had gained slight support from his performance against Bush in the debates, but his lead slowly eroded in the weeks to follow. Meanwhile, a different kind of presidential race took place, between the sales of Halloween masks of the two candidates. The Halloween festival on 31 October came just two days before the election on November 2. A costume shop in New York said the sales of the masks could predict the presidential race, and that President Bush had the edge.
Springfield, Ohio - 2 September 2004
SOUNDBITE (English) John Kerry, Democratic Presidential Candidate:
"Let me sum my response to the president's speech in four words - all hat, no cattle."
St Louis, Missouri - 8 October 2004
Various shots of Bush and Kerry shaking hands and taking their seats for televised debate
Moderator of the debate, Charles Gibson
SOUNDBITE (English) George W. The first result from Hart's gave US President George W. Bush and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry 15 votes each, and one vote to Independent Ralph Nader. As state results began to arrive from across the country, President George W. Bush and challenger John Kerry traded early victories. States like Virginia and West Virginia were seen as up-for-grabs, but President Bush won both states. After polls across the country closed late in the night, pollsters said the contest was still too close to call. The election finally rested on the result in the state of Ohio, where vote counting continued until the next day.
On November 3, Senator Kerry conceded defeat to President Bush, after it became clear that the vote in Ohio had given Bush the majority of state votes that he needed for re-election. President Bush claimed a re-election mandate after a record 59 million voted for him. But after the longest and costliest presidential race ever, the nation had revealed itself as sharply divided. Despondent Democratic supporters gathered in Boston to hear Senator Kerry's concession speech. In a victory speech in Washington DC, Bush said he had been humbled by the trust and the confidence shown by voters, and pledged to reach out to those who had voted against him.
Dixville Notch, New Hampshire - 2 November 2004
Voters picking up ballots
Names of candidates on board
Various shots of voters voting in booths
Voter casting first vote in box
Virginia - 2 November 2004
Various shots of people queuing to vote in polling station in Virginia
New York - 2 November 2004
Graphic: Bush wins Indiana
Graphic: Kerry wins Vermont
Boston, Massachusetts - 3 November 2004
Senator Kerry greeting people as he arrives to make concession speech
White House Pool
Washington, DC - 3 Nov
Still shot of President Bush talking to Senator John Kerry after Kerry's concession speech
Washington DC - 3 Nov 2004
Wide shot of cheering crowd, President Bush on stage with Vice President Dick Cheney and his family
Tilt down shot of Bush speaking
SOUNDBITE (English) George W.
