The siblings started the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eWelcome to the picturesque resort town of Pokhara in Nepal. \u003cbr/\u003eHome to a successful business with a difference. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking agency is run by three sisters, Dicky, Lucky and Nicky Chherti. \u003cbr/\u003eThe siblings started the business in 1994 after meeting tourists who had unhappy experiences with male guides. \u003cbr/\u003eSome complained of being harassed, even sexually assaulted and threatened by male guides while trekking the mountain trails that are often uninhabited.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the sisters Lucky Chhetri explains, how these conversations inspired them to become entrepreneurs. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Many of them have a good experience of Nepal and trekking. But few of them very young girls they were trekking they have very bad experience with male guides, it was kind of sexual harassment and also they were drinking and frightening them. And they were really, really afraid and feeling insecure and they were sharing with us and we don't know what to do and how can we help them on that situation. But later we started thinking like whether there is any way we can help them.\" \u003cbr/\u003eFor two decades they have been providing trained female guides to the tens of thousands of westerners that come to Nepal every year to trek the mountainous geography. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was an uphill battle for the sisters to break into the male-controlled trekking business. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditionally only men guided foreign trekkers along the mountain trails and carried their equipment. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was a struggle to find female recruits when they first began their enterprise, twenty years later, they have a waiting list of young Nepalese women who want to join their six-month training programme. \u003cbr/\u003eHowever, initially Nepalese women were unwilling to spend days walking with the foreigners away from them home, and at the same time few had the skills and knowledge about trekking and spoke English.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir solution was to bring suitable women to Pokhara, train them for months and then employ them as trekking guides.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At the beginning  when we started it was very unusual to join our programme because they had to leave their house, they had to leave for many days, they had to work with westerners, so it was very unusual and think it was against our culture, \"says Nicky, the youngest of the sisters. \"Because women are expected to be at home.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe sisters went from village to village in the mountains spreading the word, convincing the women and their families. \u003cbr/\u003eBut once these women came to the join the programme they enjoyed it and soon word spread. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sisters take in 40 students every six months, providing them with free accommodation, food and clothing for the duration of their training. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the profits of the trekking agency subsidises the training. \u003cbr/\u003eOnce they graduate from training, they make about $3,000 a year from guiding tourists, which is much more than what an average Nepalese makes. \u003cbr/\u003eThat is enough incentive for people in the Himalayan nation where nearly half the people are poor.\u003cbr/\u003eGam Maya Tilicha had wanted to become a teacher before she joined the programme. Now she is a full time guide at the agency.\u003cbr/\u003e\" I was always interested in trekking because my friends used to do that and later when I heard about the 3 sisters programme from my cousins. I was able to complete the training and immediately begin working as a trekking guide after that,\" Tilicha says.\u003cbr/\u003eSophie Whitwell, is a tourist from London, England. \u003cbr/\u003eShe says she researched several trekking agencies before she decided to go with 3 sisters because she felt comfortable having a woman guide, despite the higher fees. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I went down to inspect a lot of agencies when I was choosing my trek when I heard about 3 sisters, and I wanted to support women into work, I think it is important what they do here. It is slightly more expensive than other agencies but you can see where the money goes and 60 percent goes to women's wages, which is really important because a lot of the guides and porters are not treated very well here and don't want to be part of that.
