Sheep-laden trucks driving off\u003cbr/\u003eEritrean workers at the Red Sea port of Massawa on Saturday unloaded thousands of Australian sheep which had been stranded at sea in the Middle East for more than three months.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than a dozen trucks ferried away some of the 52-thousand sheep that had been stuck on a ship for about 11 weeks after they were originally sent in early August from Western Australia to Saudi Arabia. \u003cbr/\u003eAn Australian who helped off-load the sheep said that some seven thousand sheep had been taken to a farm about 60 kilometres (37 miles) northwest of Massawa.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Dutch managers of the sheep ship expressed their relief at finding a destination for the animals. \u003cbr/\u003eThe unloading of the sheep ended a lengthy journey which had sparked a storm of protest from animal rights activists around the world and threatened to jeopardise Australia's multi (m) million dollar live animal export.\u003cbr/\u003eSaudi officials had turned away the shipment, saying that too many of the animals - six percent of the total - had scabby mouth disease.\u003cbr/\u003eSubsequently, independent veterinarians found that there was no evidence of any infectious disease among the sheep\u003cbr/\u003eAfter Saudi Arabia's refusal to accept the sheep, the entire cargo was offered free to about 30 other countries, all of which rejected them.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than five and a half-thousand sheep died during the marathon voyage, mainly as a result of heat stress whilst waiting in port.\u003cbr/\u003eThe animals were being brought back to the Cocos Islands, a remote Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, when Eritrea agreed to accept them.\u003cbr/\u003eAustralia was to supply more than three thousand metric tons (three thousand and seven short tons) of feed and one (M) million Australian dollars (700-thousand US dollars) to meet expenses associated with the unloading, transport, holding and slaughter of the sheep in Eritrea.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gift is effectively food aid - according to the UN's World Food Programme, Eritrea is facing its worst crop failure since independence from Ethiopia in 1993.\u003cbr/\u003eA prolonged drought has seriously affected food production and has left up to one point four (m) million people - almost half of the total population of three point three (m)
