End shot of people holding hands, people holding banner reading \"justice is needed for peace to prevail\" \u003cbr/\u003ePalestinians and foreigners marched through the streets of the West Bank city of Beit Sahour, near the biblical town of Bethlehem, on Friday evening, holding the traditional annual candle-lit march for peace. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the march, which is held every year just before Christmas, Christians and Muslims alike light candles and torches and carry banners calling for peace, and stroll through the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year saw a good turn out, in a holiday season that, officials say, will bring the most pilgrims in seven years to the Holy Land, thanks to the recent resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year Muslims and Christians share the holiday season, as Christians mark the birth of Christ by celebrating Christmas and Muslims celebrate the Eid al-Adha (holiday of Sacrifice) which commemorates the biblical story of Abraham and his readiness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, who provided a lamb to be used instead.\u003cbr/\u003eChristians count for only a small percentage of Israelis and Palestinians in the Holy Land, including Bethlehem, but the town is believed to be the birthplace of Jesus, and as such is the spiritual home of Christmas.\u003cbr/\u003eTourism is integral to efforts to improve the Palestinian economy, which is tattered from years of conflict with Israel. \u003cbr/\u003eEarly in the fighting that broke out in 2000, Bethlehem was the scene of fierce shootouts between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli army forces in nearby Jerusalem, who fired at each other across a riverbed separating the communities. \u003cbr/\u003eFor several Christmas seasons, only a handful of tourists came. \u003cbr/\u003eBut relative calm in the West Bank this year, combined with renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, have persuaded some tourists to return. \u003cbr/\u003eMiddle East envoy Tony Blair visited Bethlehem this month and spent the night there to show that it was safe to visit.\u003cbr/\u003ePalestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agreed in a U.S.-hosted conference last month to renew peace talks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe reconciliation came after Abbas kicked the Islamic Hamas movement out of the government following its violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June, and installed a moderate administration of his own, backed by the West.\u003cbr/\u003eThis season, around 65,000 tourists are expected to visit the traditional site of Jesus' birth, Mayor Victor Batarseh said. That's four times the number that came in Christmas 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli and Palestinian forces have cooperated to facilitate the passage of pilgrims from Jerusalem through an Israeli army checkpoint into Bethlehem, according to a Palestinian security chief.
