Wide exterior of International Space Station truss arm\u003cbr/\u003eShuttle astronauts continued to wait on Tuesday to hear from Mission Control in Houston whether an additional space walk will be added to their mission in order to repair a three inch gouge on the belly of shuttle Endeavour.\u003cbr/\u003eEngineers on the ground continue to test similar tiles to the heat extremes of re-entry in an attempt to determine the level of danger the gouge presents.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, on board the International Space Station, crew members maintained a vigorous schedule of experiments and transfer of supplies from Endeavour.\u003cbr/\u003eAt one point on Tuesday, three members of Endeavour's crew held a news conference for major American television networks.\u003cbr/\u003eCommander Scott Kelly said that he was relaxed and that at this point he did not believe that the tile damage was not a safety issue for the crew.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's more of an issue of the ability to reuse the orbiter and damaging the orbiter. So, we still have analysis on-going and we still might choose repair it.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWednesday, Astronauts Dave Williams and Rick Mastracchio will perform a third space walk to continue installation of the power truss brought up in Endeavour's cargo bay.\u003cbr/\u003eThey spent much of Tuesday preparing the equipment they will need for Wednesday's mission.\u003cbr/\u003eOvernight, they will spend their sleep period in what is called the \"camp out,\" - segregated from the rest of the crew in a pressurised chamber to help their bodies adapt to the rigors of a space walk.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gouge is relatively small - three and a half inches by two inches (nine centimetres by five centimetres) - and the damage is benign enough for Endeavour to fly safely home. \u003cbr/\u003eBut part of it penetrates through the protective thermal tiles, leaving just a thin layer of coated felt over the space shuttle's aluminium frame to keep out the more than 2,000-degree (more than 1,000 Celsius) heat of re-entry. \u003cbr/\u003eFixing any resulting structural damage could be expensive and time-consuming.\u003cbr/\u003eTo patch the gouge, space walking astronauts would have to perch on the end of the shuttle's 100-foot robotic arm and extension boom, be manoeuvred under the spacecraft, apply protective black paint and then squirt in a liquid.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce crucial element necessary for repair of Endeavour's gouge will be the International Space Station robotic arm that will be used to manoeuvre astronauts up to the tiles.\u003cbr/\u003eMission specialist Tracy Caldwell may be assigned to be at the controls to manipulate the arm into position.\u003cbr/\u003eShe discussed the obstacles in the pathway of manoeuvring the arm under the shuttle.\u003cbr/\u003eBarbara Morgan, Mission Specialist said that seeing the international space station as the shuttle pulled in for docking was \"truly an astonishing sight.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"Towards the very end, before MECO, before Main Engine Cut Off, it gets a little bit difficult to breathe.
