Wide of children walking away.\u003cbr/\u003eStreet children in Cambodia are to receive education and job training under a new protection scheme. \u003cbr/\u003eMany so called 'street children' living on and around the beach resort of Sihanoukville suffer a life of poverty and exploitation.\u003cbr/\u003eSihanoukville is Cambodia's main beach resort. It has long been popular with tourists.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the resort's sandy beaches are also a magnet for impoverished children, hoping to make a dollar or two by selling pieces of fruit and handmade jewellery to visitors. \u003cbr/\u003eCambodia has one of the highest rates of youth homelessness in Southeast Asia. \u003cbr/\u003eNow street children in Sihanoukville are benefiting from a programme to get them off the streets, into school and eventually into a job. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than one third of Cambodians live below the poverty line, struggling to survive on less than $1 a day. \u003cbr/\u003ePoverty is especially rife in rural areas and among children, who constitute more than half of the country's population according to the United Nations Children's charity, UNICEF.\u003cbr/\u003eMany families are unable to cope, forcing thousands of children into a life on the streets. \u003cbr/\u003eToday about 1500 children are living rough or working on Sihanoukville's streets and beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eThe NGO, M'lop Tapang or 'under a tree' in English, was named after a group of homeless street children who lived under a tree on the beach.\u003cbr/\u003eThe organisation seeks to protect children while they are on the beach and to help them build a more stable life.\u003cbr/\u003eThe beach is a very dangerous place for children says Hem Samnang, M'lop Tapang's chief child protection officer.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Some beach children have a problem with tourists who don't just come here for a holiday. It's very dangerous for small children because paedophiles take them and rape them in guesthouses or hotels.\"\u003cbr/\u003eTo try to keep the children off the beach, M'lop Tapang have set up a gift shop to sell jewellery and other items made by the beach children.\u003cbr/\u003eMost are made from recycled items found on the beach and must conform to international child safe standards.\u003cbr/\u003eJoseph Menacherry is Chief Technical Advisor for the International Labour Organisation's programme to eliminate Child Labour.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the beach is not a suitable work place for children. \u003cbr/\u003e\"A child of twelve or thirteen must be in school and that's the most important point. Number two, the context of the child wandering about on a beach is also to my mind not a normal situation, it's a situation fraught with hazard.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor M'lop Tapang, the ultimate aim is to get the children off the beach and into formal education. \u003cbr/\u003eM'lop Tapang's school has 350 pupils, most of whom are former beach children \u003cbr/\u003eA non formal education programme for the youngest is designed to help them reintegrate into the state school system.\u003cbr/\u003eYounger children are provided two meals a day free of charge. That's often the only solid meal that many of them will get. \u003cbr/\u003eFor older children, various vocational training programmes are available which will enable them to earn their way off the beach for good.\u003cbr/\u003eMotor mechanic and electrical engineering classes are popular with many boys.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd for girls, clothes making and beauty courses are on offer. \u003cbr/\u003eIn line with M'lop Tapang's holistic approach, the group runs an extensive arts programme. \u003cbr/\u003eGymnastics and circus skills are popular with the boys.\u003cbr/\u003eThe girls tend to prefer traditional Cambodian dancing. \u003cbr/\u003eFor M'lop Tapang, instilling pride in the children's Cambodian culture is an important part of their strategy.\u003cbr/\u003eListening to the childrens' needs is the key to their success, says Maggie Eno, founder and chief coordinator of M'lop Tapang.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What we've done at M'Lop Tapang is the services we provide are following what the children tell us they need, so I think that is the key lesson that we've learned, that we cannot plan it for them they have to tell us. We listen to them and then we deliver the right services for them.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eToday M'lop Tapang is working with more than 2500 young people and their families at 9 centres in the Sihanoukville
