It is a mixture like you make a mixture, a dressing for salad. This does not reflect reality.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAcross town, groups of volunteers sort through boxes of medication, all donated. \u003cbr/\u003eSome are newly purchased, others have been sent by relatives of dead cancer patients, recovering stroke victims, or new mothers who overstocked on baby formula. \u003cbr/\u003eThe half-filled boxes of medicine are stacked to the ceiling, waiting to be mailed out to unemployed Greeks who have been denied hospital treatment in growing numbers since the crisis started. \u003cbr/\u003eAs health budgets and state-funded programs were slashed, problems mounted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe average state spending on health per person was cut by 20 percent as part of overall austerity measures.\u003cbr/\u003eCardiologist George Vichas set up the Metropolitan Community Clinic three years ago, to continue treating his patients who lost their health insurance.   \u003cbr/\u003eNow he oversees a network of 250 volunteers who recycle medicine, provide checkups using donated medical equipment, and set up appointments at hospitals and clinics offering charity slots.\u003cbr/\u003eVichas says the high cost of treating chronic illnesses poses an impossible financial burden for the unemployed. \u003cbr/\u003eHe warned that the long-term effects of crisis on health have yet to appear.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For the last six years and unfortunately it continues, we are creating health bombs in the foundation of this society which will explode possibly once we've exited the crisis,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The problem doesn't appear immediately. You create the conditions, it grows and becomes apparent after a certain time.\"\u003cbr/\u003eVichas said that without preventative medicine and with children not getting vaccinated there's no knowing what problems might develop. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd also said that patients with chronic diseases like diabetes and heart problems will present complications that they otherwise would not have had, if treated properly.\u003cbr/\u003eYiannis Bouchelis, a 60-year-old graphic artist who hasn't worked in four years, was at the clinic getting a blood test.
