Wide of bridge, with sign reading: \"The emerald of the southeast\" (This is the slogan for the Mexican state of Tabasco)\u003cbr/\u003eThe floods that forced hundreds of thousands from their homes in Tabasco have also wiped out agricultural production in the Gulf Coast state, one of Mexico's main producers of everything from chocolate and citrus to sugar cane and bananas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe massive flooding, which is now in its second week and at one point left 80 percent of Tabasco underwater, will be Mexico's most costly natural disaster since a hurricane devastated Cancun and Cozumel in 2005, insurers said.\u003cbr/\u003eVictims, such as Santos Acosta Varela expressed concern about illnesses the stagnant flood water can cause. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Now we want that government to use machines to drag the water,\" he said. \"The water is stagnant and beginning to smell horribly.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe state's agricultural areas are all in flat, low-lying regions and have been flooded, an official said. Crops affected include corn, citrus, sugar cane, cocoa, and bananas. \u003cbr/\u003eVast numbers of cattle have been drowned or are cut off by flood waters.\u003cbr/\u003eHeavy rains also caused flooding in the neighbouring state of Chiapas, where rescue workers were still searching for 21 missing villagers believed buried by a huge mudslide late Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe total death toll in southern Mexico rose to at least 17 on Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eAngry villagers complained authorities were in too much of a rush to bury the decomposing bodies, without leaving relatives time to perform tradition funeral ceremonies.\u003cbr/\u003eAs flood waters receded slightly in Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, residents began entering their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eIn one, people on Thursday found the body of a 78-year-old woman who was apparently trapped and drowned in her house. It is unclear how many have died in Villahermosa. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities said they had seen two bodies floating in floodwaters there earlier this week, but later said they had been unable to recover them.\u003cbr/\u003eHealth officials warned of the potential for epidemics due to stagnant water and dead animals, while President Felipe Calderon proposed a 3.4 (b) billion US dollar infrastructure project to prevent similarly catastrophic floods in the capital, Mexico City.\u003cbr/\u003eClaims from damages caused by the flooding in Tabasco state were estimated as of Thursday at 700 million (m) US Dollars, the Mexican Insurance Industry Association said in a statement. \u003cbr/\u003eIt did not list individual insurers exposed to flooding claims.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 500-thousand people had their homes damaged or destroyed by the Tabasco flooding, which also affected businesses and about 23-thousand vehicles, according to the insurance association.\u003cbr/\u003eTens of thousands of people are still huddled in makeshift shelters or on rooftops as water levels slowly drop.\u003cbr/\u003eTabasco health officials say that so far there have been no epidemics of cholera, malaria and dengue. But Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova said Thursday the proliferation of dead animals was contaminating the water, raising the threat of
